Ten hamlets are scattered across Bellaffaire. Wooded hills and green meadows shape its well-preserved landscape, where livestock farming predominates. To help you find your way around, the hiking trails, donkey activities and churches offer different points of interest—from outings in the countryside to insights into history and farming life.

Hikes Around Bellaffaire

The Tour du Village from Bellaffaire is 4.5 kilometres long, takes about two hours and is considered easy. It can be walked year-round. The route passes through a forest of Austrian pines and several pastures, bringing you near La Batie Noire. Forest and pastureland thus shape the course of this hike. Before setting off, check the waymarking and local trail conditions.

To reach the hike, drive from La Motte-du-Caire along the D951 towards Turriers. One kilometre after Gigors, turn right towards Turriers; Bellaffaire is just after this turn. You can also check road conditions and signage locally before setting out.

Another named hike is the Bois Noir trail, number 14. It starts and ends in the hamlet of Les Dorats. This gives you two different reference points: the Tour du Village from Bellaffaire and the start and finish of the Bois Noir in Les Dorats. The stated two-hour duration applies to the Tour du Village.

Discover the Landscape and Nature

On walks and hikes around Bellaffaire, you may spot the lady's slipper orchid, Alpine columbine, edelweiss and fire lily. Chamois and roe deer are also among the animals found in the area; sightings depend on luck and the time of year. If you want to take in the landscape as well as follow the trail, there are specific plant and animal species to look out for here.

The ten scattered hamlets, wooded hills and green meadows give the landscape its rural character. Livestock farming predominates here. This is also reflected in the agricultural Saint-Michel Fair, held in Bellaffaire in autumn, which brings together herds of livestock and local residents. If you would like to include the fair in your trip, check the exact dates in advance.

Bel’Âne and Farm Activities

Bel'Âne offers farm tours and donkey hikes in July and August. This seasonal availability makes those months important for planning; check before travelling whether the activities fit your dates. This lets you combine an outing on the hiking trails with a farm activity, without treating the two as the same thing.

Bel'Âne also rents miniature donkeys for periods ranging from two hours to several days. This covers everything from a short outing to a multi-day rental. Check the specific rental arrangements again in advance.

Churches and Local History

The Église Saint-Nicolas is a church dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra. It is designated a historic site and monument in Bellaffaire. Its dedication and period provide a specific insight into this part of the local heritage.

The Église Saint-Joseph de la Freyssinie was rebuilt between 1870 and 1873. By contrast, the Église Saint-Nicolas spans two centuries in its dating and has a recorded dedication, while a precise rebuilding period is given for Saint-Joseph. The two churches therefore offer different historical points of reference, without sharing the same story.
