Allemagne-en-Provence lies in the Parc Naturel du Verdon and on the road to the famous Gorges du Verdon. The town’s history encompasses several distinct themes: medieval fortification architecture, the Renaissance, church building and faience. This gives you a cultural focus for planning your trip, complemented by village walks and a designated circular hiking route.

The Château: Fortifications and the Renaissance

The Château d'Allemagne-en-Provence is classified as a historic monument. Its main construction phases date to the last quarter of the 14th century and the 16th century. The crenellated keep dates from the 12th century; five defensive towers flank it and are connected by a curtain wall. In the Middle Ages, the complex was surrounded by moats. From 1495, François de Castellane added an elegant Renaissance wing. The building therefore reveals several distinct periods of its history: the medieval keep, the fortifications and the later addition of the wing.

Saint-Marc: Parish Church and Romanesque Chapel

The parish church of Saint-Marc stands on the Vaugiscle promontory, overlooking the village. Its present-day structure was built no earlier than 1550. The northern nave is Romanesque, while the tower and choir date from the 13th century. The bell tower houses a bell dating from 1666. The furnishings also reflect different periods: the church has a 17th-century painting of the Rosary depicting the fifteen Mysteries of the Virgin Mary, as well as an Annunciation in a pre-17th-century style. The tabernacle dates in part from the 15th century.

Distinct from the parish church is the Chapelle Saint-Marc, an 11th-century Romanesque chapel. Its eastern section and the bell gable rising above it form a rare Romanesque architectural ensemble. Together, the two Saint-Marc buildings show that the town’s history includes different religious buildings and periods; the parish church and the chapel should not be confused.

Faience and the Town’s Earlier History

Faience workshops began operating in Allemagne-en-Provence in 1722 and continued until the 19th century. Their designs and colours were inspired by the patterns and colours used in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This craft history broadens the picture beyond the buildings, revealing another strand of the town’s cultural history spanning several centuries. The town’s earlier past also includes a Roman secondary road that ran through the territory of Allemagne-en-Provence.

Walks and a Circular Hiking Route

On a walk through Allemagne-en-Provence, you can visit the village washhouse. The fountain is another destination for village walks. For a hike, there is the circular route “Du château à la chapelle Saint-Marc,” starting in Allemagne-en-Provence. It is rated easy, covers 3.8 kilometres and has an elevation gain of 236 metres; the stated duration is one hour and 18 minutes. So, alongside the village sights, there are specific route details to help you plan a hike.

Along the way, the route passes the grave of a former Baron of Allemagne-en-Provence, who died here during the Wars of Religion. This adds a historical dimension to the circular hike, while the distance, elevation gain and duration indicate the time and physical effort involved. The route listing was updated on 11 June 2026; its details may change. Please check them before setting out.
