La Puye combines waterside paths with a rich religious and Acadian history. The Circuit des étangs offers a clearly defined walk; wetlands and springs add to the picture of the landscape. Churches, former monastic sites and the Ligne Acadienne tell other stories of the area. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between time by the water, cultural and historical sites, and accommodation with a spiritual focus.

Paths, ponds and wetlands

The Circuit des étangs circular route is 6 km long, with a stated walking time of 2 hours. It follows the shores of two ponds: one is set up as a leisure area, while the other is designated for fishing. Their different uses are part of what makes the route distinctive. Near the first pond, you can also see a hydraulic ram, an invention by the Montgolfier brothers. Along with the pond shores, the path thus offers a specific point of interest in engineering history.

The Base de plein-air de La Puye is beside the Petit Étang and close to the Chapelle des Filles de la Croix. The facilities include large green spaces, children’s play areas, a boules court and picnic tables. The base is open year-round. Swimming is possible in summer during supervised hours; check the swimming times before your visit. This makes the seasonal swimming offer distinct from the year-round access to the site.

Another walking trail goes around the pond and crosses a recently created wetland, as well as the surrounding springs. The La Puye area also includes damp valleys and dry plateaus. These two landscape types form a marked contrast, while the pond path takes you through a specific water-rich environment. Although the Source de Saint Bonifet is on private land, access is permitted provided you respect the tranquillity of the place. Access conditions may change, so check the information on site when you arrive.

Acadian history and religious buildings

A walk along the Ligne Acadienne passes preserved buildings that recall how La Puye welcomed Acadian exiles in 1773. The Church of Saint-Hilaire de La Puye is also linked to the history of the Acadian community in Poitou and to the Ligne Acadienne between La Puye and Archigny. It dates from the 11th century and was altered in the 16th and 18th centuries. It has been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 2002.

The Fontaine aux Dames also evokes the area’s monastic history. Its protective structure preserves Romanesque architectural elements from the former priory church, including carved corbels. The convent chapel of the Filles de la Croix stands on the site of a former Fontevrist priory; its vaults and stained-glass windows are especially noteworthy. The Maison-Mère des Filles de la Croix is a 12th-century Fontevrist monastery and is now a mother house. It welcomes anyone seeking silence, beauty and inner reflection.

Stay at a spiritual centre

The La Puye spiritual centre welcomes sisters from around the world, as well as religious and non-religious people seeking peace and rest. Individuals or groups can stay there with or without spiritual guidance; arrangements may vary. This option adds an explicitly spiritual setting for your stay to the cultural and landscape-related reasons to visit.
