The Forteresse d’Angles-sur-l’Anglin rises more than 40 metres above the Anglin. There is also an exceptional prehistoric frieze and a Romanesque church—reasons to discover the place, especially through the lens of its history and culture. If you prefer spending time outdoors, the Anglin Valley offers more options, from walks to canoe trips.
Heritage among the fortress, frieze and church
The Forteresse has stood for almost a thousand years, and one of its towers offers a panorama over the Anglin Valley. In view are the Sainte-Croix district, its houses with gently sloping tiled roofs, and the Romanesque church. The fortress is free to visit; guided tours are available by prior booking only. As visiting arrangements may change, check them before your visit.
At Roc aux Sorciers, the story goes much further back: the carved frieze dates from 15,000 years ago. It depicts animals and human figures from the world of Cro-Magnon people, including three carved women. The presentation includes a 20-metre-long prehistoric frieze, a lifelike replica and an immersive film. There is also a replica that visitors can touch. This lets you explore the site both through the preserved artwork and the way it is presented.
Église Sainte-Croix is what remains of an abbey church founded in the 11th century by Isembert I, Bishop of Poitiers. A testament to 12th-century Romanesque architecture, it also has its own architectural language: its floor plan forms a Latin cross, and the nave has a ribbed vault. On the façade, the main portal is set between two blind portals. These details offer a concrete reason to look at both the floor plan and the design of the façade.
The handmade Jours d’Angles embroideries are also part of the area’s cultural history. They have shaped Angles-sur-l’Anglin’s reputation for 150 years. When choosing a cultural focus for your stay, you can therefore include this long-standing craft tradition alongside the architecture and prehistoric art.
The Anglin Valley and outdoor activities
Angles-sur-l’Anglin consists of an upper town and a lower town, with picturesque, narrow and steep streets. This is a practical consideration when planning to explore on foot. The Anglin Valley offers a different focus: the Natura 2000 landscape includes caves, limestone cliffs and rare species. The Vallée de l’Anglin area covers Angles-sur-l’Anglin, Saint-Pierre de Maillé and Béthines. It is home to 15 different bat species, with more than 1,000 individuals.
You can explore the valley on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by canoe. Climbing is possible on the Guignoterie cliffs on routes 6 and 7, and in the La Dube area on routes 4 and 5. Check the route and safety conditions locally. There are no supervised swimming areas in the Anglin—an important distinction when planning activities on the water.
For a canoe trip, Canoëcolo provides boats, life jackets, paddles and waterproof containers on the left bank at bridge level. The trip returns to its starting point; the provider does not offer transport. Check the current arrangements before setting out. This means the return journey is part of your planning and should not be confused with a return transport service.
There are also two differently described options for exploring on foot: the free “Tèrra Aventura: Les jours d’Angles sont contés” treasure hunt is done on foot. The GR100 passes through around 30 historic sites, including Angles-sur-l’Anglin, over 20 stages. These details provide a different framework from the treasure hunt: one is a named activity, the other a long-distance trail with several stages. They help you narrow down what you are looking for without treating the two options as equivalent.
Tailor your stay to your interests
For a heritage-focused stay, the fortress, Roc aux Sorciers, the church and the embroidery tradition take centre stage. If you want to spend more time outdoors, you can choose between several ways of getting around the valley and take the relevant conditions into account. Whether you prefer a guided tour, a canoe trip or an independent activity will also shape your choice.
