Availles-Limouzine stands on a promontory above the Vienne Valley. The town’s history includes the church of Saint-Martin, a surviving tower from the feudal castle and two town gates on Rue des Cavaliers. Activities include a very easy circular trail, a treasure hunt, a fishing course and the Scandibérique. A botanical garden adds another dimension to these varied attractions. You can shape your stay around the town’s architectural history, a walk or cycling.
Saint-Martin and surviving historic buildings
The church of Saint-Martin appears in archival documents dating to around 1090. Its nave is thought to date from the late 11th or early 12th century. The church was extended in the 15th century; in particular, the choir was completely rebuilt. The nave is the main part of the church, while the choir contains the altar area. This distinction makes the sequence of construction clear: the early date applies to the nave, while the choir was rebuilt as part of a later expansion.
Two town gates survive at either end of Rue des Cavaliers. On the left bank of the Vienne, a tower from the feudal castle of Availles-Limouzine is still standing. A house at 15, rue du Château preserves a doorway with a curved lintel and a relief-carved coat of arms that has not been given heraldic detailing. Together, the church, street, riverbank and house entrance offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
Explore on foot and follow your own interests
The Chemin d'OC et d'Oïl, circular trail No. 13, starts in the town centre. The route is two kilometres long and rated very easy. Its starting point, circular shape and length make it a clearly defined walking option. Another activity is “Tèrra Aventura: À Vienne que pourra!”, a free treasure hunt in Availles-Limouzine. It offers a distinct theme alongside walking.
The fishing course in Availles-Limouzine offers Bolognaise, Anglaise, feeder and pole fishing. The Au Paradis des fleurs et des oiseaux botanical garden covers 3,000 m² and features more than 1,300 plant varieties. Alongside outdoor activities and local history, fishing and plant diversity can therefore also be independent interests to consider when planning your trip.
Cycling route through the Vienne Valley
The Scandibérique offers a different scale from the local circular trail: its section through the Vienne department is just over 115 kilometres long, passes through 21 municipalities and follows the Vienne Valley from Dangé-Saint-Romain to Availles-Limouzine. On the Scandibérique route to Availles-Limouzine, the trail follows small, picturesque roads with little traffic. Check the route conditions before setting off.
The two-kilometre circular trail and the department-wide cycling route offer different ways to include Availles-Limouzine in your plans: as a starting point for a short walk or as part of a longer bike ride. In the town centre, the La Châtellenie restaurant prepares menus using fresh seasonal produce sourced from local producers. Local cuisine can also have its own place in planning your stay.
