Saint-Aubin-le-Cloud brings together the winding banks of the Palais, historic architecture and walking routes of various lengths. The “Balade au fil de l’eau” walking route is 5.6 kilometres long; other paths are about 600 to 900 metres. Hedgerows, heathland and bodies of water add further landscapes to the mix. During your stay, you can explore the river landscape, walking routes and architectural history as distinct themes.

The Palais and the landscape

Saint-Aubin-le-Cloud lies along the winding banks of the Palais, a tributary of the Thouet. The agricultural landscape includes hedgerows and heathland. The English landscape park of Parc du Theil covers 200 hectares: meadows and ponds make up one half, and deciduous woodland the other. Since 1946, the park has been protected as a “Site pittoresque” (picturesque site). Open spaces with water and wooded areas therefore occupy equal parts of the park.

Routes by length and destination

The longest of the routes mentioned is the “Balade au fil de l’eau” walking route: it starts at the church square and is 5.6 kilometres long. The shaded Sentier du Palais runs alongside the Palais for about 900 metres. The Chemin des Cracottes is about 800 metres long and connects the plan d’eau with La Vrignaudière on the D139. The Chemin des Loges is about 600 metres long and ends at the Palais. So the shorter routes also differ in their directions and destinations: the Sentier follows the river, the Chemin des Loges ends there, and the Chemin des Cracottes connects two named points. This information can help you choose a route based on its length and the way it is described.

Bodies of water and facilities

At the three-hectare plan d’eau, visitors can use picnic tables, children’s play equipment and a multisport court. The outdoor facilities with step-free access for people with reduced mobility include a fishing platform, paths and outdoor toilets. You should confirm the current conditions at these outdoor facilities before your visit.

Church, washhouse and château

The Church of Saint-Aubin is built in the Flamboyant Gothic style and has a cruciform floor plan. Construction was completed in 1547; this date is inscribed on a keystone. The floor plan describes the shape of the building when viewed from above, while “Flamboyant Gothic” names the architectural style. The keystone makes the year of completion visible on the building itself.

The covered washhouse near the Palais was built in 1922 and is an impluvium-style washhouse. This building for everyday use adds another chapter to local architectural history, alongside the church and château.

The Château du Theil is mentioned in the “Cartulaire de l’Absie” in 1154. The château itself, its outbuildings and its immediate surroundings are listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The date and the listing represent two different historical references: an early written mention and the protected area around the château.

Guided tours with commentary are offered in Parc du Theil, covering the château, the fishpond, the walled kitchen garden and the woodland paths. The themes therefore bring together architectural features, water, gardens and parkland.
