For a stay in Ménigoute, nature, outdoor activities and cultural heritage can be considered as distinct focal points. At Bois Pouvreau, the water and leisure facilities take centre stage. The routes vary by activity and length; the Chapelle Jean-Boucard combines Gothic architecture with a building history that can only be dated approximately. The Festival international du film ornithologique adds a six-day nature event to these themes. First decide whether time by the water, a hike, a mountain biking route, historic buildings or a festival date will be the deciding factor for your trip.

Bois Pouvreau: Water and leisure

Bois Pouvreau is a 25-hectare nature and leisure area. Of this, 11 hectares are water, designated for fishing. Fishing platforms and picnic areas are among the visitor facilities. There are also play areas, a boules court and mini golf. A bar-restaurant and a nature campsite extend the offer. Alongside fishing, the focus is therefore also on opportunities to take a break and enjoy other leisure activities in the area. Individual facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

Comparing hiking and mountain biking

The signposted hiking loop starts at the town hall and is 4.5 km long. A longer hiking option leads from the town centre to Bois Pouvreau: the 13.3 km route passes through typical sunken lanes of the Gâtine. Check the conditions for this route locally. Another signposted route is intended for mountain biking. It also starts at the town hall, covers 25.2 km and passes through Fomperron. This gives you two hikes of different lengths and to different destinations, alongside a separate cycling route. The shared starting point for the hiking loop and mountain biking route is a practical reference for planning; however, the two options differ in activity and distance.

The chapel and historic heritage

The Chapelle Jean-Boucard is a Gothic building and was probably built before 1525. It is also known as the Chapelle des Hospices or Chapelle de l'Aumonerie. It was designated a Monument historique in 1862. The construction date and the designation are different points in time: before 1525 refers to its uncertain date of origin, while 1862 is when the chapel was designated. The Croix hosannière was also designated a Monument historique, by decree dated 22 March 1889. The dates can be clearly distinguished: 1862 applies to the chapel, and 1889 to the Croix hosannière. The Gothic style and the cautious dating offer two distinct perspectives on the Chapelle Jean-Boucard.

A festival as a time-specific occasion

The Festival international du film ornithologique de Ménigoute was founded in 1985. It lasts six days and offers nature-related activities for children and adults. The programme varies from one edition to the next. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the event dates and the specific programme in advance. The founding year and duration serve different purposes: 1985 dates the festival’s origins, while six days describes its duration. The particular edition also matters for travel planning because the programme changes. This makes it possible to consider a festival visit as a separate focal point alongside the nature area, routes and cultural heritage.
