Irais offers several specific points to consider when planning your trip: the star-shaped village center, the history of the Église Saint-Paul and natural inventories covering large parts of the municipality. Hiking and cycling routes are also listed nearby. Before looking for a holiday rental, you can weigh up whether local history, landscape or outdoor activities should shape your stay.

Village Center and Église Saint-Paul

The center of Irais is laid out in a star shape around a central square. Limestone walls marking the property boundaries leave views into the gardens. If you are getting to know the village through its layout, two details can serve as guides: the arrangement around the square and the walls that leave garden views unobstructed.

The Église Saint-Paul also tells a story of several building phases. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and fortified during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1569, a fire caused by Protestants destroyed its spire; the upper part of the bell tower was rebuilt around 1607. Note the different dates: the rebuilding of the church and the later restoration of the upper bell tower refer to separate events.

Natural Inventories and Birdlife

The reference sheet updated in 2024 lists the ZNIEFF “Plaine d'Oiron à Thénezay” as a type 2 continental ecological inventory area and gives its total area as 16,016.69 hectares. According to the inventory, this ZNIEFF covers 58 percent of the municipal area of Irais. A separate inventory entry records the ZICO “Plaines de Saint-Jouin et d'Assais-les-Jumeaux” as covering 41 percent of the municipal area of Irais. The percentages refer to Irais; the figure in hectares, by contrast, refers to the total area of the ZNIEFF. Environmental inventories may be updated as datasets are revised.

According to the INPN reference, the ZNIEFF makes a significant contribution to preserving French populations of the Eurasian Stone-curlew, Montagu’s Harrier, Hen Harrier and Little Bustard. The INPN reference also describes the ZNIEFF as an important stopover and wintering area, particularly for the European Golden Plover. These statements refer to two distinct aspects: the contribution to preserving certain populations and the area’s importance as a stopover and wintering site. There are also 0.57 hectares of wetlands within the municipality of Irais. The figure for the 0.57 hectares of wetlands may be updated as inventory datasets are revised.

Hiking, Cycling and Getting There

Near Irais, the hiking route “Les sentiers du Thouarsais – Saint-Généroux” is listed as 3.2 kilometers long and rated easy. Another option is the cycling route “Le Thouet à vélo,” loop “La plaine, entre Dive et Thouet”: it is listed as 5.7 kilometers long and rated moderate. This gives you a choice of different activities and difficulty levels; check local trail conditions before setting out.

For travel planning, Thouars SNCF railway station is listed as 14.8 kilometers from Irais. Check connections before your trip. When looking for a holiday rental, it may help to set your priorities: local history and the village center, the listed natural areas or nearby routes. The station information is a separate planning consideration; it does not replace checking which connection suits you.
