A rampart walk on the fourth floor of the Château de Cherveux offers panoramic views over the village and the Niort plain. Other highlights in the village include the castle’s architectural history, the signposted Sentier de découverte de Bouriquaille and the « À fleur d’eau » landscape garden. This combination offers a clear choice between history, a walk through the countryside and garden art.

Château de Cherveux and its defensive architecture

The Château de Cherveux was built in the 15th century by Robert Cunningham. He was a Scottish captain who had served Charles VII and later became captain of Louis XI’s Guard. The castle can thus be placed within a specific historical period through the career of its builder. Its irregular pentagonal fortified plan is complemented by wide moats, slender towers, a drawbridge and a keep. The plan describes the overall shape; the moats, towers, drawbridge and keep are individual defensive features. The rampart walk on the fourth floor extends the view of the architecture to include a panorama over the village and the Niort plain.

Saint-Pierre Church: an older point of reference

Saint-Pierre Church stands right next to the Château. It was built in the 12th century, making it older than the 15th-century castle. The church underwent major renovations in the early 20th century, when its stained-glass windows were also replaced. They depict a long series of saints and saintly figures. The two neighboring buildings therefore reflect different periods of construction, while the renovations and windows reveal another layer of the church’s history.

« À fleur d’eau » Garden

The five-hectare « À fleur d’eau » landscape garden encompasses varied landscape settings and several biotopes. Its features also include around 40,000 trees. Unlike the defensive architecture, the garden combines different art forms with vegetation: stone sculptures, stained-glass works and metal artworks create contrasting accents of material in this landscape. Those interested in designed gardens will find a different focus here than at the Château and the church: the emphasis is on the interplay of plants, biotopes, landscape and art.

Discovery trail and waterside activities

The Sentier de découverte de Bouriquaille is a signposted discovery trail almost two kilometres long. It starts at the former temple, goes around the school and then winds through the countryside. Its route therefore differs from a visit focused primarily on the historic buildings. If you plan to include the trail, check the route on site.

The Plan d’eau de Cherveux / Saint-Christophe was created in 1972 at the initiative of the mayors of Cherveux and Saint-Christophe-sur-Roc and lies within the territory of both municipalities. At the Plan d’O de Cherveux–Saint-Christophe, a water-ski lift and high ropes course activities are available. Seasonal conditions and operator availability for these activities may change. If they are important to your plans, check current availability in advance. This waterside attraction offers a different focus from local history, the garden and the signposted trail.
