There are two very specific ways to explore Chenommet: the Sentier de Bellevue and the historic landmarks in the commune. The hiking trail starts at the Église Saint-Pierre; the church combines its role as a starting point with a 19th-century restoration, a medieval holy-water font and a history as a former priory. La Pierre Folle adds a different kind of monument, whose current condition should be taken into account when planning.
The Sentier de Bellevue: route and views
The Sentier de Bellevue is 7 km long; the walking time is about 1 hour 45 minutes. The church in Chenommet serves as the starting point. After leaving the village, the trail runs along the Charente River; at Bellevue, it offers a panorama over the Charente Valley. This gives the walk specific reference points: the start at the church, the stretch along the river after leaving the village and the view at Bellevue. The distance and approximate walking time help you estimate how much of your stay to set aside for hiking. You can add breaks at your own pace when planning your day. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Église Saint-Pierre and its history
The Église Saint-Pierre was restored in 1872–1873. It was a priory dependent on the abbey of the same name in Cellefrouin. The church also has a stone holy-water font from the 14th century, which is classified as a historic monument. The restoration, its former ecclesiastical affiliation and the medieval font offer different ways to explore the history of the place. The church is therefore not only the starting point of the Sentier de Bellevue, but also a cultural and historical landmark in its own right in Chenommet.
La Pierre Folle: monument and legend
La Pierre Folle is a tumulus in the middle of a field. The monument consists of an irregularly shaped cairn containing a dolmen. It is currently densely overgrown and badly deteriorated. These features present a different picture from the Église Saint-Pierre: at La Pierre Folle, the focus is on the monument’s form, its location in the field and its current condition.
A local legend is also associated with the monument. It tells that the stone at La Pierre Folle danced on some evenings when the church bell in Couture rang. The legend links the stone to a named church and adds a local storytelling tradition to the architectural description. The monument and the legend thus offer two different perspectives on the same landmark.
Another local highlight
Equestrian activities are also part of the village’s profile. The Poney Club de la Côte association is located at 1 chemin de la Côte in Chenommet. It promotes horse riding in all its forms, particularly vaulting, and organises official competitions. This complements the perspectives of hiking and cultural heritage with a dedicated local equestrian association.
