For a stay in Luxé, you can plan around two main interests: the length of the Sentier des Dolmens and the historic sites. The trail offers two options and includes monuments as stops; the Eglise Saint Aignan offers a different focus. This lets you consider how much room to give a longer or shorter walk, and what role cultural history should play in your itinerary.

Walking: two route lengths and named stops

The Sentier des Dolmens offers a 10-kilometre option and a 14-kilometre option. The shorter route is therefore four kilometres shorter. This gives you a concrete comparison when weighing the length of the trail against the other plans for your stay.

The starting point is Place de l’église. Signposts and information boards mark the Sentier des Dolmens. Check the route details again before setting off. The trail’s named stops include the Dolmen de la Maison de la Vieille and the Tumulus Motte de la Garde. If you want to combine walking with archaeological themes, these are two specific sites to consider as part of your route.

Dolmens and their historical classifications

The Dolmen de la Maison de la Vieille is a Neolithic monument in Luxé. It has been listed as a historic monument since 23 January 1956. The Dolmen dans le tumulus dit La Motte-de-la-Garde is also a Neolithic monument in Luxé; on the Sentier des Dolmens, the corresponding stop is called Motte de la Garde. The different names help distinguish the monument’s name from the name of the stop.

The Dolmen de la Folatière is another Neolithic monument in Luxé. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1 October 1957. The protection dates for the two monuments are associated with different status terms: the Maison de la Vieille is listed, while the Folatière is classified. Both sites offer an introduction to Neolithic monuments, while their respective protection histories provide an additional historical point of reference.

Eglise Saint Aignan and local history

The present-day Eglise Saint Aignan was created by combining two churches located immediately next to each other and is dedicated to Saint Aignan. Inside are a fresco, statues and relics. The church is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; as opening hours may change, check the times before your visit. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the church as a separate activity, apart from choosing between the two route options.

La Terne offers another historical perspective. In Gallo-Roman times, it was an important town with a theatre and river port. The different themes represent distinct periods: the Neolithic dolmens, La Terne’s Gallo-Roman urban history, and the history of the present-day church, which was formed from two neighbouring churches. These distinctions can help you choose the cultural focus of your stay rather than grouping all the sites into a single historical period.

Nature as a distinct perspective

The Prairies de Villorioux et de Luxé are designated as a type 1 ZNIEFF and are recognised for their ecological value. This designation adds a natural dimension to the cultural themes. For a wider area, the Vallée de la Charente en amont d’Angoulême Natura 2000 site has 150 kilometres of walking and mountain biking trails. This figure applies to the whole area, not just Luxé; conditions may vary from one trail to another. When choosing between the two routes on the Sentier des Dolmens and the wider trail network, it is therefore important to check the details for the specific trail.
