Écuras combines a notable former priory with nature trails and horse-riding activities. Its wooded, hilly, green landscape provides the setting for a range of discoveries: the church offers a glimpse into the history of the village, the Vallée de la Renaudie has trails with clearly defined themes, and the Domaine des Limousines caters to those looking for short rides or longer horseback tours. You can plan your stay around whichever aspect interests you most.
The church at the heart of the former priory
The priory church of Écuras dates from the 11th century and forms the surviving core of a notable former priory complex. Its original layout has been fully preserved, including the nave, the choir ending in an apse, and the crossing. The two sacristies in use today are also part of the complex; they originally had barrel vaults. The crossing is the area where the church’s arms intersect, making the building’s layout particularly easy to understand.
A visit therefore focuses not only on the church’s age but also on its layout. The nave, choir and crossing are distinct parts of the same floor plan, while the sacristies complement this historic arrangement. Anyone interested in church architecture will find several specific structural features here that reveal how the space is organised.
Nature trails with different themes
The Vallée de la Renaudie nature reserve extends across Montbron, Écuras and Rouzède. The meeting of limestone and granite soils has created a variety of habitats that support numerous animal and plant species. Three themed trails take visitors through the area: the biodiversity trail is 4 km long, the geology trail 3.5 km, and the water trail 3 km. The trails thus differ both in theme and in length: the biodiversity trail is the longest, while the water trail is the shortest.
Écuras’s hiking trails can also be enjoyed in different ways: on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. There are also climbing rocks within the commune. The outdoor activities therefore include both themed trails in the nature reserve and other opportunities for hiking and climbing within the commune.
Short rides and longer horseback tours
The Domaine des Limousines is an equestrian tourism and horse-boarding centre in the commune of Écuras. It offers one- to two-hour rides, either alone or in groups. Half-day, full-day and multi-day horseback tours are also available. The duration can help you plan: you can choose a shorter time slot for a ride or a tour that takes up more of the day or spans several days. Availability may vary, so check the services on offer before booking.
Cultural traces in the village
The Saint-Étienne spring was reputed to cure numerous illnesses, particularly incontinence and bleeding. This is a historical local attribution, not a claim of medical efficacy.
Founded in 2022, the ÉcurArts cultural project aims to develop and organise exhibitions, workshops and seminars in the centre of Écuras. The programme and opening hours may vary. Another link between local history and walking trails was created in 2013, when the commune restored fountains and washhouses in 16 villages and connected them with two hiking trails.
Village Le Chat bathing area
The bathing season at the Village Le Chat bathing area was scheduled to run from 1 June to 1 October 2026. A precautionary swimming ban was in force there from 27 July 2026. After green-coloured water was observed, the bathing area was closed as a precaution due to suspected cyanobacteria. These details relate to 2026; check the bathing area’s current status before visiting at a later date.
