Cherves-Richemont offers several distinct themes for a stay: Romanesque church architecture, listed buildings, routes on foot and by bike, and wine visits by appointment. Different details matter when planning: check route conditions before setting out; visits to Giboin Vignoble require an appointment.
Churches and Architectural History
The Église Saint-Vivien is a Romanesque building with three Byzantine domes and an apse. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1988. The Église Saint-Georges preserves an 11th-century crypt; the site has been classified since 1937. Their specific features offer different points of interest: Saint-Vivien has its domes and apse, while Saint-Georges has its preserved crypt. The classification years refer to each site's monument status and should not be confused with the dates when the buildings were constructed.
At Château Chesnel, the façades, roofs, courtyard areas and moats are protected under a listing dated 24 May 1965. The moats are deep and cut into the rock. The protection therefore covers features of the building as well as parts of the courtyard area. For an architectural focus, the château complements the religious buildings with its protected exterior and structural features.
The Templerie de Cherves, also known as Saint-André, included a Saint-Jean oratory. Only part of the residential building survives from the older buildings; it probably dates from the 17th century. This partially preserved building, whose date is given cautiously, offers a different point of interest from the classified churches or the protected features of the château. The architectural remains therefore differ in form, state of preservation and protection status.
Hiking and Cycling
A GPX track for the GR4 between Cognac and Cherves-Richemont is available via GR@ccess and Mon GR. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Véloroute Cognac – Boucle locale 24 B is a very easy, 23.2-kilometre cycling route from Cognac to Cherves-Richemont. In Cherves-Richemont, it includes a stop at a medieval cross in front of the church. The cycling route has a specified length and difficulty level, while the GPX track for the stated section is the main feature of the GR4. Compare these details with your preferred way of travelling, and check current route conditions before a cycling trip as well.
Another hiking destination is the Pont de fer. It is now used by many hikers as a crossing and is of historical value. The bridge was built at the end of the 19th century, probably in 1896; restoration work took place in 2019. The dates refer to different things: 1896 is the probable construction date, while 2019 marks the restoration work.
Wine Visits by Appointment
Giboin Vignoble in Cherves-Richemont offers visits by appointment covering the vineyards, winemaking, distillation and ageing. The visit thus takes you through various stages, from the vineyard to ageing. Arrange your appointment in advance and confirm the current visiting arrangements, as these may change. This advance step is essential for planning and distinguishes a winery visit from the routes: at the winery, arrangements begin with an appointment, while for a hike or cycle ride, you check route conditions before setting out.
