A striking oak stands in the center of Chassors: It is 23 meters tall and has a circumference of 477 centimeters at a height of 1.50 meters. Its age is estimated at 400 to 450 years. Traditionally, the tree is referred to as a tree of liberty associated with the French Revolution. Alongside wine and craftsmanship, Chassors is therefore notable for a distinctive natural feature and a historical tradition.
Cognac, Cooperage and Wine
Le Circuit du ChĂŞne is a wine tourism experience that begins in a cooperage workshop and leads to the vineyards of Chassors. A cooper demonstrates the individual steps involved in making a barrel live. The experience also explains how Cognac, Pineau and wine are made, highlighting the skills of coopers, wood splitters who make barrel staves, and distillers. The focus is therefore not only on the finished drinks, but also on the work involved in producing them.
The circuit also includes explanations of distillation using a Charentais still, Pineau production and Cognac aging, as well as a tasting of Pineau, Cognac or wine. Check the date of the demonstration and the format on offer before your trip; contacting the organizers in advance is recommended. A Cognac workshop at Frères Moine includes a 30-minute comparative tasting of Cognac eaux-de-vie from Fin Bois and Grande Champagne. Reservations are required for this workshop.
The terroir and wine are also part of Chassors’ culinary profile: The terroir is described as comparable to the area around Segonzac, which is classified as Grande Champagne. Chassors wines enjoy a good reputation. Together with insights into barrel-making and distillation, this gives the area a clear focus on winegrowing, production and the crafts associated with them.
Church History and Art
The Church of Saint-Romain offers another way to explore the town’s history. In 1107, the Bishop of Saintes transferred the church to Saint-Cybard Abbey in Angoulême, which founded a priory there. Its Romanesque capitals feature vine leaves and grapes; fragments of frescoes remain on parts of the choir walls. The church thus brings into focus both a specific historical date and details of its decoration.
The Chapel of Luchac dates from the 19th century and is used occasionally. Another cultural highlight can be found at Preswar Expo, above the Frères Moine distillery: An exhibition of screen prints, paintings, collages, metal sculptures and photographs is currently on display there. The contrasting perspectives of church art, historic buildings and contemporary works complement the themes of wine and craftsmanship.
