Trails Between Landscapes and History
Around Asnières-Sur-Nouère, trails can be distinguished by their focus: the Sentier des orchidées et des truffières offers a specific route with an approximate time frame, while other circular routes highlight the landscape or railway history. The architectural heritage also features distinctive details—from the Romanesque layout of Saint-Martin to the raised living floor of the Logis de Nouère.
The Sentier des orchidées et des truffières is an easy 9-kilometre hiking trail; walking time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. For planning your day, this is an approximate guide, not a minute-by-minute estimate. The distance and difficulty rating add two further specific details about the route.
The Circuit entre vignes et Nouère passes through vineyards, small woods and cultivated landscapes before reaching the Nouère at Gouthiers. The two routes therefore offer different highlights: the Sentier focuses on distance and walking time, while the Circuit focuses on the succession of landscapes.
The circular route “Circuit sur les traces du P'tit Rouillat” follows the former railway line between Angoulême and Rouillac. This connection was in operation from 1885 to 1950. The former railway line therefore provides a distinct historical reference among the circular routes.
Saint-Martin: Romanesque Layout and Decorative Details
The parish church of Saint-Martin was the seat of a parish that has been documented since the 11th century. Its Romanesque layout comprises a nave, a false square and a polygonal apse; together, these features describe its structure. The vaults are made of bricks. The chapel contains a coat of arms of the Nouère family, added in the 17th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of the parish’s history and the chapel’s furnishings: the former dates back much further than the coat of arms added later.
The baptismal fonts have a drain hole and have been protected as an object since 17 June 1933. The drain hole describes a structural detail, while the date establishes when their protected status began.
Historic Buildings with Distinctive Architectural Features
The forge is a notable building in the centre of the village; the corners of its street-facing façade are rounded. The Logis de Nouère is a large rectangular building with a double-flight spiral staircase and a living floor raised above a cellar. Its elevated position was intended to protect it from flooding by the watercourse. The forge’s façade and the Logis’s combination of staircase, living floor and flood protection thus represent different architectural features.
The windmill at Neuillac dated from 1870; it is said never to have been in operation and was destroyed in a storm in 1904. The claim that it was never operated remains uncertain, while its destruction is dated to 1904.
