A trip to Marsac can begin with very different details: the architectural history of the Église Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, walks connected with the Charente and its vineyards, or the Baignade de la Grande Île. These topics appeal to different interests. While the church is associated with a building history spanning several centuries, the two routes showcase different aspects of the landscape; the Baignade, in turn, is open during a specifically designated season.

Church Architecture in Several Stages

The Église Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais dates from the second half of the 12th century. Its single-nave body comprises three bays. A pendentive dome rises above the crossing, while the 15th-century choir has a rib vault and ends in a flat wall. This allows you to distinguish different parts of the interior and different periods of construction in a single building.

The three bays divide the nave along its longitudinal axis. Together with the dome above the crossing and the later-dated choir, they create a clear sequence from the nave, through the crossing, to the end of the church interior. Architecture enthusiasts will find several specific features here that help describe the building’s layout: its single-nave design, the form of the dome, and the rib-vaulted choir with its flat end wall.

Walking Routes Between the River and Vineyards

The Circuit du fleuve Charente et des vignes circular route leads from the banks of the Charente into open, rolling countryside where fields and vineyards meet. Along the way, the route crosses a footbridge over the Doux and runs alongside a river branch for 1.5 kilometres. It therefore includes both a stretch directly beside the water and a transition into open countryside with agricultural land.

The Circuit des fontaines et du fleuve Charente takes a different approach: the walk connects the springs of Ladoux, Les Guérinauds and La Faye with the Charente. While the Circuit du fleuve Charente et des vignes features a river branch, a bridge and vineyards among its named route features, this walk focuses on three specific springs and their connection to the river. You can therefore choose between the two routes based on the landscape features that interest you most.

Swimming Season on the Charente

The Baignade de la Grande ĂŽle is an outdoor swimming and recreation area on the banks of the Charente. For 2026, the swimming season was scheduled to run from 1 July through 31 August. If you are planning for a later year, check the applicable season dates; the period given refers to the 2026 season.

The area includes a picnic area, children’s play equipment and a snack bar. As these facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning a visit. This lets you consider a swim, a walk or a visit to the church as separate parts of your trip to Marsac, rather than assuming they form a fixed itinerary.
