Vinax lies on the eastern edge of the Vals de Saintonge in the Charente-Maritime département. At an average altitude of 140 metres, the commune is also the highest in the département. This geographical setting combines a clearly defined landscape with a notable elevation. Two other themes are particularly concrete when choosing the destination: the Romanesque church and the Forêt d’Aulnay. They lead from medieval architecture to a forest landscape that also features in a local historical account.

Romanesque church with surviving details

Vinax’s Romanesque church was built in the 12th century. It has retained a 12th-century apse articulated by columns, as well as a cornice with corbels, known as modillons. One of these corbels depicts a beehive. Two aspects of the design can therefore be distinguished: the columns articulate the apse, while the beehive appears as a single motif on the cornice. For anyone interested in Romanesque architecture, this offers more than a general reference to the period: the construction date, architectural elements, and a specific figurative detail are all connected in Vinax.

The church stands in open countryside, away from the village centre. Its rural setting adds a second, spatial aspect to the account of the site’s history.

A historical wolf sighting

Vinax is associated with the last reported wolf sighting in the Charente-Maritime département. The last reported wolf was found at the edge of the Forêt d’Aulnay; the event is dated to 1932/33. No other wolf has been recorded in the département since. Alongside the Romanesque church, this is a historical story with a specific point of reference at the forest’s edge.

Forêt d’Aulnay and Massif forestier de Chizé-Aulnay

The managed Forêt domaniale d’Aulnay also extends into Vinax. The Forêt d’Aulnay is one of the region’s most significant deciduous forest areas. The Massif forestier de Chizé-Aulnay covers 17,357 hectares and is designated under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. The forest theme thus brings together two scales: the managed forest that extends into Vinax and the wider massif designated under the Habitats Directive.

The Maison forestière de la Croix de Vinax is one of the five forest lodges in the Forêt domaniale d’Aulnay. Together with the forest area and the massif, it offers a specific point of reference for travellers interested not only in the church but also in forest history and regional nature.

The themes can be clearly distinguished when choosing a destination: the church represents Romanesque architecture and a specific detail on the cornice; the forest connections range from the Forêt domaniale, which also includes Vinax, to the 17,357-hectare massif. The reported wolf sighting connects the forest with local history. If you are choosing a stay based on cultural and natural themes, your decision will therefore depend chiefly on whether you place greater emphasis on architectural history, the forest, or the connection between them.
