Discover Pisany through its architecture and market history: the Halles de Pisany reflect the town’s historic market tradition, the Chapelle Saint-Léonard features clearly described religious architecture, and the Château de Pisany offers guided tours by reservation and an annual medieval weekend. These different highlights can guide your choice of accommodation. When planning, pay attention to the conditions for each visit: guided tours, events and communal dining have different dates and booking requirements.
The Halles and Pisany’s Market History
The Halles de Pisany were rebuilt in the 16th century by Jean de Vivonne, the first Marquis of Pisany. They are fully listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments; the listing took place on 6 January 1971. This places both the reconstruction and the later protected status in their historical context. Historically, Pisany had four annual fairs and a weekly market. In 1476, King Louis XI granted the parish of Pisany the right to hold four annual fairs and a weekly market.
The Marché de Pisany takes place outdoors year-round beneath the medieval Halles. Today’s market and the historic fairs reflect different chapters in the town’s history. Check local information about the market before travelling.
Chapelle Saint-Léonard: Building History and Details
The laying of the foundation stone and the completion of the Chapelle Saint-Léonard took place several years apart: the solemn ceremony was held on 5 July 1785 under the supervision of the parish priest Antoine Fabre; the chapel was completed in 1788. The two dates therefore mark different stages of construction and should not be treated as the same event.
The rectangular nave and round-arched windows describe the building’s form. The 19th-century stained-glass windows, whose motifs are mostly botanical, offer a different point of interest. The chapel thus brings together architectural design and later decorative details. It stands on Avenue Jean de Vivonne, in a small square opposite the Halles, making its spatial relationship to the building clear.
Visits and Events at the Château
The Château de Pisany offers guided tours on Wednesdays and Sundays by reservation. As visitor access may change, confirm the details before travelling. The days of the week and the reservation requirement are important planning points: do not assume you can join a tour spontaneously.
A large medieval weekend is held at the Château every year on the third weekend in May. Check that year’s programme before planning your stay around it. Unlike the weekly guided tours, this event takes place on an annual schedule.
The Château also offers a table d’hôtes in a medieval setting. Guests dine together with the owners. If you plan to include this meal in your itinerary, confirm availability and booking conditions in advance.
Getting There by Regional Bus
Regional bus line 12 between Saintes and Royan serves Pisany at the Place des Halles stop. Check the timetable before travelling so you can factor the connection into your arrival plans. Along with information about guided tours and events, this practical step helps you plan your journey and visits separately, taking account of their respective conditions.
