There are several themes to explore during a stay in Clion. At the Église Saint-André, two heritage protection orders apply to different parts of the building; the Chapelle Saint Paul combines a history dating back to the 12th century with a mass celebrated annually. The Musée artisanal et rural is dedicated to rural life, while hiking trails and cheese-making on a goat farm offer further points of interest. You can choose how to balance cultural history and rural themes according to your interests.

Churches and their history

The apse and bell tower of the Église Saint-André were classified as historic monuments by order dated 15 March 1909. The remaining, unprotected parts were listed as historic monuments by order dated 5 December 2000. The two dates therefore relate to different parts of the church and different orders; the church’s heritage history cannot be reduced to a single date. If you are placing the site in its cultural context, you can keep 1909 and 2000 in mind as separate reference points.

The Chapelle Saint Paul is notable for its construction period and recurring annual event. It was built in the 12th century as a Templar chapel. Since 1986, a mass has been celebrated there every year on 15 August. This brings together a historical origin and a recurring annual religious tradition. If you plan to attend the mass, check the date for the relevant year in advance. 15 August provides a clear annual reference point.

Rural life and cheese-making

The Musée artisanal et rural presents rural life in seven themed rooms and has more than 2,000 restored tools. The museum also includes outdoor sheds covering 250 m², with nine themed areas. The collection and layout offer different ways to explore: the tools make up the material collection, while the rooms and outdoor sheds cover various subject areas. If you are interested in tools, the collection offers a specific focus; if you prefer to explore by theme, you can use the seven rooms and nine areas as a guide.

Chèvrerie Chez Paul et Pauline keeps Poitevine goats, a local breed, and makes cheese daily. No cultures are added during production; the cheese is shaped with a ladle and salted by hand. Goat farming and specific cheese-making steps are thus presented side by side. Visits to the farm are possible on request and should be arranged in advance.

Trails and further discoveries

Clion is the starting point for numerous old trails popular with hikers. Their availability can vary seasonally, so check the trail in question before setting out. Clion-sur-Seugne also has the Terra Aventura experience “Ziclou, plus fort à Clion!”.

When choosing a focus, you can distinguish between architectural history, rural everyday culture, and outdoor activity: the church and chapel offer different historical reference points, while the museum and Chèvrerie present rural life through their collections and production. If you include the trails, take into account that they may change seasonally; a visit to the farm requires an advance request.
