Loix brings together the Atlantic coast, cultural heritage and opportunities to explore local crafts. The Loix peninsula has 14 kilometres of Atlantic coastline; experiences here range from a circular walk to guided visits and seasonal activities. When planning, you can consider distance, duration and visiting conditions separately: a route is described by its length, while several visits have set time requirements or seasonal conditions.

Coast, circular walk and water experience

The “Balade accessible à Loix” circular walk starts in Loix and is 2.3 kilometres long. It passes through the salt marsh landscape to the Loix tidal mill and has been awarded the “Tourisme & Handicap” certification. If you are looking specifically for an accessible circular walk, you can include this certified route in your selection. The coastline and route figures refer to different scales: the 14 kilometres refers to the peninsula’s Atlantic coastline, while the 2.3 kilometres refers to this specific circular route.

Canoë Salé offers a different kind of experience: a seasonal, bookable canoe trip to explore the Fier d’Ars. The guided trip lasts 1.5 hours and includes observing the local wildlife and plant life. Which animals and plants you can see depends on the season, tides and weather. Check current departure times in advance. This lets you compare the circular walk with a water experience of a set duration, without conflating the route’s length with the trip’s duration.

Sainte-Catherine Church and maritime heritage

The construction date of Sainte-Catherine Church is unknown, but it dates from after the beginning of the 14th century. From 1827, it was extended in the neoclassical style. A maritime ex-voto in the form of a frigate model is housed in the church and is considered one of the two oldest on ĂŽle de RĂ©. Sainte-Catherine thus brings together two distinct historical aspects: its long construction history and a tangible testament to maritime devotion.

Workshops and seasonal visits

At Atelier Quillet, craftsmanship meets the care of old documents: the workshop is designated an “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” and specialises in their conservation, restoration and binding. By reservation, it offers 50-minute guided tours with commentary. Check current tour days before your visit.

At Loix & Savons, visitors can watch the traditional production of donkey’s milk soap, including the making of scented soaps. Free guided tours are offered seasonally; dates may change. The two workshop visits focus on different subjects: Quillet is about old documents, while Loix & Savons is about soapmaking.

For wine enthusiasts, Domaine Arica opens its wine cellar from April for a guided tour and a free wine tasting; no reservation is required. The visitor experience is seasonal, so check current dates and arrangements in advance. The vines are organically grown. If this growing method matters to your decision to visit, confirm that it is still practised, as methods can change. The visit requirements therefore differ considerably: a reservation is required for the workshop tour at Atelier Quillet, but not for the wine tasting.
