Saint-Pierre-D'Oléron offers several starting points for planning your trip: architectural history, island culture, beaches and tides, and wine. You can choose your focus depending on whether you are more interested in architecture and history, activities on the water, or tastings.

Architectural History and Island Life

The façade of Église Saint-Pierre was rebuilt in the neoclassical style in the 18th century; the bell tower bears the year 1776. These details mark different parts of the building’s history: the century refers to the rebuilding of the façade, while 1776 appears on the tower. If you are interested in architecture, you can relate the style and dates to specific parts of the building.

The Musée de l’île d’Oléron focuses on the island’s history and ethnography, as well as traditional activities. Its topics range from salt production, winegrowing and resin extraction to fishing, traditional dress and housing. This perspective on working and everyday culture complements the architectural history. An important planning note: the permanent exhibition is currently closed due to expansion work.

Château de Bonnemie was built in the 14th century. Its landscaped park invites visitors to stroll, while the château itself is not open to visitors. The historical connection and a walk in the park are therefore two distinct aspects of this place.

Beaches and Tidal Activities

Plage de la Biroire is a sandy beach where you can gather shrimp and crabs on foot at low tide. This activity is suitable for families; swimming is unsupervised. If you are visiting for on-foot shellfishing, plan your visit around low tide—it is essential for the activity described.

Plage de Matha is also a family-friendly beach, near the fishing port of La Cotinière. Visitors can enjoy walks and water sports there. Compared with Plage de la Biroire, where on-foot shellfishing depends on low tide, the emphasis here is on beach walks and water sports. This helps you choose between the two beaches based on the experience you want.

The two-hour event “Pêche à pied d'exploration” offers another way to discover the tidal beach. It includes exploring the beach, identifying species, learning about their ecological importance and how to behave responsibly, as well as a tasting. Reservations are required for the event, which is listed as lasting two hours.

Wine and Tastings

At Vignoble Favre & Fils, the tour includes the wine cellar and distillery, followed by a Pineau des Charentes tasting. This visit therefore combines insights into two areas with a tasting.

A guided tour of a vineyard and wine cellar in Saint-Pierre-D'Oléron also ends with a tasting. Meanwhile, children aged 7 to 16 are offered a Jesmonite workshop. Reservations are required for this tour. The age range and accompanying activity make it easier to plan with children, while distinguishing this tour from the other wine visits.
