Breuillet brings historic buildings together with a landscape between the Seudre and the Gironde. Saint-Vivien, the Protestant temple and the La Rainette circular trail offer specific ways to explore heritage and nature. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Breuillet, you can make these themes different focuses of your stay.

Churches and historic buildings

The church of Saint-Vivien in Breuillet has been mentioned since 1186; on 9 May 1914, it was listed as a Monument historique. Its wide portal is decorated with geometrically ornamented archivolts, and the façade is described as a “triumphal arch.” Archivolts are the decorated mouldings that frame a portal arch. At Saint-Vivien, they provide a specific architectural feature; the description “triumphal arch,” by contrast, refers to the façade as a whole. The designation “Monument historique” refers to the French heritage protection status.

The façade of Breuillet’s Protestant temple displays the sculpted Bible created for its predecessor. The former temple served Breuillet’s Huguenots. This brings two distinct religious connections together: Saint-Vivien and the Protestant temple.

The Logis de la Roche, also known as Le Prieuré, was a former priory under the authority of Cluny Abbey. The private estate preserves two Renaissance fireplaces; one depicts the Sacrifice of Abraham. According to an engraved inscription, the year 1593 is marked on the well at the Logis de Chalézac.

The dates refer to different things: 1186 is the first mention of Saint-Vivien, 1914 is the church’s listing as a Monument historique, and 1593 is the date on the well inscription. This helps connect each date to the relevant building and its status.

Landscape and walking trails

Breuillet lies on the Arvert Peninsula between the Seudre and the Gironde, a few kilometres from the ocean. The landscape includes numerous wooded and protected areas, cultivated fields and pastures, as well as vineyards and oyster beds. Cattle egrets and grey herons fly above the vineyards and oyster beds.

The La Rainette circular trail passes through the Saint-Augustin freshwater marsh. This marsh is characterised by distinctive flora and a rich variety of birdlife. The marsh trail and the wider landscape offer different points of focus: flora and birdlife characterise the natural area described, while fields, pastures, vineyards and oyster beds add to the broader landscape.

Three walking trails are available in Breuillet, developed in collaboration with the Communauté d’Agglomération Royan Atlantique. If you are planning a walk, check the current trail conditions before setting out.
