Chaniers brings together the Charente, walking paths, a seasonal ferry service and several historic sights. To plan your trip, start by deciding what matters most: spending time by the river, including the Flow Vélo, or taking a closer look at the church, mill and fishing museum. You can also keep these priorities in mind when searching for a holiday rental, without turning them into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

The Charente, riverbanks and green paths

A large meadow with poplar trees stretches between the village of Chaniers and the river port. It can flood in winter; in summer, it is used for relaxing and walking. If you are travelling in summer, it makes a spot for an outdoor break. If you are visiting in winter, bear in mind the possibility of flooding.

The Charente Valley around Chaniers and its riverbanks are part of the Natura 2000 network. The area is home to a rich variety of wildlife and plant life, including rare and threatened species. The Charente is navigable from Angoulême to Rochefort. Passing boats can use the 54-metre pontoon at Chaniers free of charge for a stopover; advance notice is required.

The ferry, Flow Vélo and local routes

The Flow Vélo is a 350-kilometre cycling route from Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare in the Dordogne to Île d’Aix in the Charente-Maritime département. From Chaniers, you can reach the Flow Vélo at Courcoury by crossing the Charente by ferry. This service operates from April to October. Check the ferry schedule before setting out; the crossing also depends on river conditions.

Several routes for walking, mountain biking and horse riding are also available in Chaniers, including a dedicated family route. These offer different options alongside the connection to the longer Flow Vélo route: you can plan around your chosen way of getting about and the seasonal ferry service.

A path connects the Communal at the ferry landing with the La Baine site and continues to the lock. It is suitable for a scenic walk; river conditions can affect access. The Communal has children’s play equipment as well as a shaded green space for picnics and relaxing. You can plan a walk and a break in the green surroundings as separate parts of your stay.

Church, mill and fishing museum

The Église Saint-Pierre de Chaniers was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1912. Its distinctive architectural details include a covered battlemented walkway with five merlons and embrasures on the sides. The period when it was built and its later listing are two distinct historical reference points; the defensive features draw attention to the church’s design.

The Moulin royal de la Baine was built in the 17th century under Colbert and had seven water passages. The mill offers a different historical focus from the church: here, the interest lies in the mill building and its water passages, while at the church it is the covered battlemented walkway.

The Musée de la pêche aux lignes et aux engins presents traditional fishing techniques based on customs passed down over time. Fish are caught using passive devices set out in the water. The exhibits include eel traps, trammel nets, carrelets and fish scales, as well as old fishing rods and reels and their historical development. The fishing gear thus complements the architectural history with a glimpse of traditional fishing methods.

Plan a stay that suits you

When looking for a holiday rental in Chaniers, you can start with what matters most to you. If you want to include the ferry connection to the Flow Vélo, the April-to-October operating period and the crossing’s dependence on river conditions are important. For those interested in culture, the church, mill and fishing museum each offer a different focus; if you want to spend time outdoors, you can consider the paths, meadow and Communal. Compare the location details of a specific listing with your plans so that your accommodation and itinerary reflect the same priorities.
