Ten bridges cross the Somme, its tributaries and the drainage canal in Pont-Remy; the town is also home to the history of Saint-Pierre Church and a castle on an island. For a walk or hike, the Les hauts de Pont-Rémy route covers 9.5 kilometres. The Véloroute Vallée de Somme offers a much longer cycling route: it is 200 kilometres long.

Church, castle and mill site

Saint-Pierre Church features remarkable stained-glass windows from the 16th century, which came from an earlier church. The building was rebuilt in 1817. The windows and rebuilding thus point to two different chapters in the church’s history: the older origins of the glasswork and the later renovation of the church.

Another chapter can be found at the Usine du Bas site. It was initially home to a grain mill, operated by the miller M. Hullin in the 17th century. The mill adds another historical facet of the town to its church history.

The Château de Pont-Remy stands on an island. In the past, it protected traffic on the Somme and the river crossing. It was remodelled in the Troubadour style between 1837 and 1840. For a view of the castle, the towpath by the harbour is a good choice. The castle park is currently closed to the public.

The Somme, river channels and bridges

The Somme flows through Pont-Remy in several channels. Ten bridges cross the Somme, its tributaries and the drainage canal. Together, these details give a clear picture of how prominent the waterways are in the townscape: river channels run through the town, and the bridges cross different waterways and the canal.

The Les hauts de Pont-Rémy route also initially follows the Somme and its ponds. It then climbs towards fields and forests. This transition from waterways to more open landscapes makes the route a distinctive way to explore the surrounding area on foot; it also clearly sets it apart from the town’s historic buildings.

A walking route and a cycling route along the canal

Les hauts de Pont-Rémy is signposted for walks and hikes with yellow PR trail markers. The 9.5-kilometre route is rated very easy to easy. It starts at the nautical stop on the towpath, 250 metres from the church, and ends in Pont-Remy. Its starting point, length, rating and landscape provide useful details for planning this route as part of your stay.

The Véloroute Vallée de Somme is for cyclists and runs along the canal. Its signposted route connects Tergnier with Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and is 200 kilometres long. To support cyclists, the route offers picnic areas, bicycle parking and a service network. Compared with the 9.5-kilometre walking route, the Véloroute is the longer of the two routes mentioned; the figures help illustrate their different scales.
