Discover Le Crotoy through its tide-shaped landscapes, outdoor activities and maritime history. A walking route passes through a variety of coastal landscapes; kitesurfing and windsurfing take place at the northern end of the beach. The railway station and church offer other, distinctive points of interest. To decide whether Le Crotoy is right for your trip, consider what you’re looking for: nature and birdwatching, outdoor activities, or historic architecture and railway history?

Nature reserve and views across the Baie de Somme

The Site nature de La Maye nature area lies at the Maye estuary, at the entrance to the Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve. Its tide-shaped landscape includes salt marshes, dunes, reed beds and wide-open spaces. The area is suited to walkers and birdwatchers and is also a starting point for guided nature excursions. If you’re planning a guided tour, check local availability.

The Belvédère Manessier offers visitors a view across the Baie de Somme. An information panel there is dedicated to the painter Alfred Manessier. At the viewpoint, expansive views of the landscape sit alongside a direct connection to art. The nature area and the Belvédère offer different perspectives: in one, the impression is shaped by the tides and varied landscapes; in the other, the view extends across the bay.

Walking, cycling and water sports

The Balade au Crotoy walking route is a 10-kilometre circular trail of moderate difficulty, starting and ending in Le Crotoy. It is marked in yellow as a PR route (Promenade et Randonnée) and carries the FFRandonnée label. The route starts at the bay and the sea, then leads to the entrance of the Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve. The return route follows the coastal path behind the dunes, passing pine trees and dunes; the final stretch runs along the La Bassée marshland. Its length, difficulty level and sequence of landscapes provide concrete guidance when choosing a walk.

The Cayeux-sur-Mer–Le Crotoy section of La Vélomaritime / EuroVelo 4 offers a different way to explore the area. A route guide dated 18 May 2021 gives its length as 28.94 kilometres and describes it as suitable for beginners and families. Check current route conditions before setting out. The Balade au Crotoy is a circular walk that starts and ends in Le Crotoy, while the cycling section is named after its two towns. This makes it possible to compare the two options by activity and the route details given for each.

For those interested in water sports, there’s another point of interest at the northern end of Le Crotoy beach: kitesurfing and windsurfing take place there. Check the applicable rules and safety conditions before taking part. A marked walking route, a described cycling section and the water sports mentioned here cater to different interests without needing to form part of the same itinerary.

The railway station and church: two historical perspectives

Gare du Crotoy was the first station to open on the Réseau des Bains de Mer, on 1 July 1887. Its original exterior has been preserved. A small exhibition of railway items—including panels, signals and tools—is housed in the goods shed. Those interested in railway history will find both the station’s architectural history and tangible railway artefacts here.

The Church of Saint-Pierre combines historic architectural features from the 13th century with a Neo-Gothic reconstruction from the mid-19th century. Inside are maritime ex-votos. The church thus brings together different periods of architectural history and a maritime theme. The railway station and church complement the nature and activity options, offering an opportunity to explore Le Crotoy’s architectural and historical heritage.
