Ully-Saint-Georges offers two distinct ways to explore the village: its architectural history and walking routes of different lengths. The Église Saint-Georges preserves part of the wall of an earlier Romanesque church; meanwhile, two walks differ considerably in both distance and stated duration. This gives you a practical question to consider when planning: would you prefer to focus on local history, or set aside time for a longer walk?

Church and tithe barn

The Église Saint-Georges was classified as a historic monument by decree on 28 February 1951. To the right of the west portal, part of the wall of the earlier 11th-century Romanesque church survives. The opus spicatum masonry features a distinctive laying pattern that can be described as herringbone. The church also has a choir with three apses, considered exceptional for a relatively small rural church. The 11th century refers to the earlier church; 1951 is the year the Église Saint-Georges was classified.

To the north of the church is the Ancienne grange dîmière, the former tithe barn. It dates from the 14th century and was listed as a historic monument by decree on 6 June 1933. Above the portal is an échauguette, a small watchtower. The 14th century refers to when it was built, while 1933 is the year it was listed. The tithe barn adds a separate building to the picture of local history, with a distinctive feature above its portal.

The hamlet of Coupin is also home to a depiction of the Virgin Mary, another religious landmark in the commune.

On foot: two different time frames

The Visite de la commune d’Ully is a four-kilometre walking micro-hike, with a stated walking time of one hour. It follows roads and paths and is intended to help visitors discover the commune. At four kilometres and one hour, it is a compact way to explore Ully-Saint-Georges on foot.

The longer La grande boucle starts on Grande rue. The official 2024 walking guide lists it as 15.5 kilometres, rates it difficult and gives it a duration of four hours. Its route takes in sights in Ully-Saint-Georges and Foulangues: in Ully, the Église Saint-Georges and the Ancienne grange aux Dîmes; in Foulangues, the church and the former quarries. Compared with the shorter local route, it covers more distance and takes longer; its difficult rating is another difference.

Stream and railway history

The Ru de Cires rises in Cauvigny and flows through Ully-Saint-Georges, linking the village to the place where the stream begins. Local history also includes the former railway station building at 30 avenue de la gare, which still stands. From 1879 to 1948, Ully-Saint-Georges was served by the station on the railway line from Hermes to Beaumont. The stream and railway connection represent different aspects of the area: one is geographical, the other tied to a clearly defined period in history.
