A historic trail, archaeological sites and routes with clearly defined features give Lacroix-Saint-Ouen a character shaped by local history and time outdoors. Its traces range from Stone Age industry to bronze-making and woodworking; there is also a Sunday market and several routes with different focuses. When choosing a place to stay, you can weigh up cultural discoveries and outdoor activities according to your interests.
Archaeology and Historic Traces
Archaeological excavations at the Basse Queue gravel pit uncovered traces of a Stone Age industry. At Mont Chyprès, excavations revealed metallurgical workshops where bronze objects were made. A historic trail with information panels offers another way to discover local history. The panels were renewed in 2019.
The town’s craft and industrial past is also reflected in specific names and dates. The Harmand-Fercot sawmill and crate factory is listed as historic heritage and was founded in 1848. Layetterie represents another facet of woodworking. From 1784, Lacroix-Saint-Ouen gained a certain reputation for boxes and chests made of beechwood; this craft was known as layetterie. The history of a specific factory and a named craft tradition thus stand side by side.
Market and La Prairie Philosophique
At the municipal market in La Croix Saint Ouen, you can stroll among the stalls with your family on Sundays and enjoy an atmosphere full of flavour and conviviality. As market times and stalls may change, check the current schedule before your visit.
La Prairie Philosophique offers toilets, Wi-Fi and a library. It also plans formats to be imagined together: workshops, immersive experiences, rituals and open-air dialogues.
Hiking and Routes
The easy, 8.6-kilometre “Du Puits du Roi au Vivier Corax” hike passes through Lacroix-Saint-Ouen. At the edge of the Lacroix-Saint-Ouen forest, it reaches the Chemin des Plaideurs and follows this route. The Chemin des Plaideurs is one of the oldest paths in the forest. Residents of Lacroix-Saint-Ouen used it to seek justice from the bailiff of Pierrefonds. This brings a clearly named hike together with a path that had a specific historical function.
The section of the Greenway between Lacroix-Saint-Ouen and Verberie alternates between forest, ponds and riverbanks. The route runs on dedicated paths for 95 percent of its length and has no inclines. The Greenway Trans'Oise and EV3/Scandibérique connects Lacroix-Saint-Ouen with Pont-Sainte-Maxence and continues the Compiègne–Lacroix-Saint-Ouen route. Compared with the hike, other features take centre stage here: the changing scenery, the proportion of dedicated paths and the level route. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the current route and trail conditions.
