Beaulne brings together interests in nature and hiking with a distinctive village history and a story of remembrance. A regional nature reserve, trails from the stream to the heights, the Gothic Église Saint-Rémi and a wayside calvary give the choice of destination different points of interest. A village walk is described as 4.5 kilometres and two hours; other routes draw attention to valleys, woodland and wide-open landscapes. When looking for a holiday rental, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your travel interests.

Landscape between stream, woodland and heights

The RNR – La Montagne Est de Beaurieux is a regional nature reserve in Beaurieux. It covers almost five hectares and provides a refuge for numerous species. The trails, too, offer different landscapes. “BEAURIEUX Marche du Tordoir” runs between open country and woodland along the Tordoir stream. The “Sur les hauteurs de Beaurieux!” outing leads to the heights, with expansive landscapes and panoramic views. The “BEAURIEUX De la montagne à la plaine avec des vues remarquables” circular route leads from the plain up to the heights and back. Views along the way include the Aisne and Tordoir valleys, as well as a distant view towards the Chemin des Dames. These routes offer different highlights: the stream and the transition between open country and woodland, valley views, or broad vistas from the heights.

A village walk with a stated duration

The “BEAURIEUX Le tour du village avec de très belles vues” circular route is classed as an easy hike: it covers 4.5 kilometres and takes two hours. The route goes around Beaurieux and partly through the village; information about Beaurieux’s history may accompany the walk. This gives the route a clearly stated duration, village sections and a possible historical dimension. When planning your day, you can use the stated duration as a guide for how much time to allow for this route.

Church, relics and remembrance

The Église Saint-Rémi de Beaurieux is Gothic and has a stone spire considered unique in the Laonnois. It houses the relics of Eutrapie, the sister of Nicaise, a bishop of Reims in the 5th century. The church thus brings architecture and religious tradition together: its Gothic form, stone spire and the story of Eutrapie and Nicaise.

The Calvaire de Beaurieux offers a different point of interest. This wayside calvary was erected in late June 1925 to commemorate the First World War dead and to give thanks to Providence that the commune was spared destruction despite being very close to the Chemin des Dames. Its creation links remembrance of the war dead with gratitude for the commune’s preservation. The church and calvary thus lead to different historical themes: religious heritage on the one hand and remembrance of the First World War on the other.

The layout of the village also features in “BEAURIEUX Marche du Tordoir”: the route refers to the upper and lower village, the old and new village, and the vendangeoirs. This adds a perspective on the structure of the village itself to the landscape and church themes.
