Mercin-et-Vaux combines a setting in the Aisne valley with a steep, wooded plateau and a local history spanning from Gallo-Roman times to the Château’s former municipal uses. These different features can help you choose the perspective on the town that suits you best.
Landscape between the Aisne and the plateau
Mercin-et-Vaux lies in the Aisne valley in Hauts-de-France, on the river’s left bank. The northern part lies beside the Aisne; the Ru du Voidon flows through the village before joining the river. To the south is a steep, clay-and-limestone plateau. Woodlands cover mainly its slopes and summit. The northern part’s riverside setting and the wooded heights to the south thus represent two clearly distinct aspects of the local landscape. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the connection to the Aisne or the plateau and woodland will be a greater factor in your stay.
Gallo-Roman traces and the Château
The historical perspective reaches back to Gallo-Roman times: a Gallo-Roman villa was built in Mercin around the middle of the 1st century BC. The former Château de Mercin belongs to a much later period. Construction began in the 13th century, when it served as the seat of the lordship and as the residence of the lords who lived there. The villa and the Château thus represent two distinct periods in the town’s history. In 1909, the former Château passed into the ownership of the municipality; the town hall, a school and teachers’ accommodation were established there.
The Rochy-Condé Greenway
The former Rochy-Condé railway line crosses the area of Mercin-et-Vaux and is now a Greenway and memorial trail. In 2016, it was converted into a Greenway so that cyclists and pedestrians could travel safely. The route is six kilometres long. Its role in a stay can therefore be clearly distinguished from the area’s historical connections: the trail offers a route along a former railway line, while the villa and Château reflect its Gallo-Roman and seigneurial history, respectively.
Pools and balneotherapy area
Les Bains du Lac in Mercin-et-Vaux has two different pool facilities. The sports pool measures 25 × 25 metres and has ten lanes; the leisure and learning pool covers 450 m². The balneotherapy area includes a pool with numerous massage jets, two hammams, two saunas and a whirlpool. The facilities therefore comprise a lap pool, a leisure and learning area, and a wellness area. As facility details may change, check the current description before your visit. At 25 × 25 metres, the sports pool covers 625 m², making it 175 m² larger than the leisure and learning pool, which covers 450 m².
