The nave of the Church of Notre-Dame de la Visitation was built in the 11th or 12th century. Together with historic traces of the water supply system and two hiking trails, Thoiré-sur-Dinan offers several points of interest for an exploratory visit.

Church, Washhouse and Building History

Restoration work uncovered remarkable murals in the nave and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. The church also has a rare conical bell tower. Its construction period, murals and tower shape each provide a different perspective, offering insight into the building’s history and the artistic design of the place of worship. For those interested in cultural history, the appeal lies in these different ways of viewing the same church.

The communal washhouse in the hamlet of La Roche lies at the northern edge of the village centre. Its restoration preserved a historic meeting place where the village women exchanged news for many years. Alongside the church’s history, it evokes memories of a place for everyday social life.

Further traces of building history can be found in Vaux-Thierry: some houses preserve faint traces of a little-known minor noble domestic culture that may date back to the 16th century. The residence of the Genetay watermill may also date from the 16th century. This cautious dating is part of the picture these historic remains present.

Water as a Source of Power and Supply

In the 19th century, the Dinan stream powered up to four mills in Thoiré-sur-Dinan. Another use of water can be seen in the hydraulic ram (Bollée): from 1891 to 1977, it supplied the village centre with pressurised water. The surviving ram is still visible by the watercourse. Mill power and pressurised water supply illustrate two distinct technical uses of water in the village’s history.

Landscape and Trails

Together with the Narais Valley and the Bercé Forest, the Dinan forms a Natura 2000 site recognised by the European Commission. Wildlife and plants found in Thoiré-sur-Dinan include deer, roe deer, badgers, birds and mushrooms.

Two hiking trails start in Thoiré-sur-Dinan: the T4 is 8 km long and the T5 is 14 km. The T5 is therefore six kilometres longer than the T4—a specific difference in planned route length, from which no walking time can be inferred. Check the route lengths against the current local trail markers.

Traditions and Travel Planning

Thoiré-sur-Dinan celebrates Saint Vincent’s Day every year. The festivities include presenting a barrel in the communal wine cellar, followed by a convivial meal. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific event dates before travelling.

The La Truite Dinantaise association also organises a festival day in Thoiré-sur-Dinan, where fishing is showcased. The private motorhome stop in the village offers picnic and relaxation areas; confirm these facilities locally before your arrival.
