For culture and trails, Bessé-sur-Braye offers two distinct highlights: the Château de Courtanvaux and its extensive grounds, as well as routes that start in or pass through the town. The town’s history stretches from the first mention of the fief of Courtanvaux to the present-day church, built at the end of the 19th century. When planning your visit, you can choose between spending time on the grounds, following a route with a specified distance, and exploring other trail connections.

Château de Courtanvaux: History and landscape

The Château de Courtanvaux is partly classified as a historic monument and partly listed as a historic monument. The fief of Courtanvaux was first mentioned in 1332. This gives the site a historical point of interest that can be combined with a visit to the surrounding landscape.

The Domaine de Courtanvaux covers 68 hectares, including woods, gardens, a landscaped park and bodies of water. These varied features shape the grounds and provide a scenic setting for the château. If you would like to combine culture and exercise, the Bois de Courtanvaux circular trail passes through the château’s gardens and woods.

The Courtanvaux grounds are open and free to access for walks every day throughout the year, except in the event of exceptional closures. Before you travel, check whether a closure applies. For the circular trail, check the condition of the path and the trail markers on site.

During guided tours of the château, you can learn about the women who shaped the history of the place. Tour times may change; check the current schedule if you would like to include a guided tour in your visit.

Hiking trails and getting there

The Circuit du Pays Calaisien starts at the church and is 18 km long. The long-distance GR 235 trail passes through Bessé-sur-Braye. The two routes offer different points of reference: the Circuit has a named starting point and stated distance, while the GR 235 is identified by its route through the town.

Bessé-sur-Braye is accessible by public transport on Aleop line 215 from Le Mans via Saint-Calais. As timetables may change, check the connection for your travel date. This lets you include the Aleop line 215 in your day’s plans.

The church and local history

The present-day church in Bessé-sur-Braye was built between 1891 and 1893 and retains some of its original stained-glass windows. The square bell tower is the only surviving element of the former church. Together, the construction date, windows and tower offer different clues to the history of the church site. The Circuit du Pays Calaisien also starts at the church, giving it a specific connection to a walking route.

Events and activities

The château’s events calendar runs from April to October and lists the “6h VTT de Courtanvaux” as one of its highlights. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the current event dates.

Leisure activities on the grounds include hiking, mountain biking, geocaching and fishing. The availability of individual activities may vary, so check in advance which options are available for your visit. Along with the trail through the gardens and woods, these activities offer a choice between a hike on the grounds and other leisure pursuits listed there.
