Nuillé-le-Jalais offers two distinct ways to experience a stay: the Sentier des oiseaux, a circular route through the commune’s landscapes, and the town’s architectural and commemorative history. The parish church is a shared point of reference: it is listed as a historic monument and is also the starting point of the route. Other sites include the former presbytery, the Lavoir de la Fontaine and the war memorial, which commemorates the First World War. This can help you decide whether your trip should focus more on walking, local architecture and history, or a combination of these interests.

On foot: the Sentier des oiseaux

The Sentier des oiseaux is 7.1 kilometres long and follows a circular route. It starts at the church in Nuillé-le-Jalais and passes exclusively through the commune’s landscapes. Its length, circular layout and starting point offer practical details for planning your day. You can weigh up whether the walk should be the main focus of a day or complement the architectural and historical sites. The church is not only the starting point of the route, but also a heritage site in its own right. Visitors interested in both can find a clear connection here between a named route and a significant building.

The church and former presbytery

The parish church of Nuillé-le-Jalais was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 5 December 1984. The Sarthe Council for Architecture, Urban Planning and the Environment also highlights it as part of the commune’s heritage. Its listed status and this recognition offer two different perspectives on the same building. The former presbytery was listed on 28 December 1984; its façades and roofs are protected. Both listings therefore date from the same month, but concern different buildings. In the case of the former presbytery, the protected parts are explicitly named. These details give local history an architectural focus without equating the church with the presbytery.

The Lavoir de la Fontaine

The Lavoir de la Fontaine adds specific measurements and a construction detail to the architectural history. Its basin measures 14 metres by 4 metres. The washhouse was restored in 2004–2005, and part of its former wooden framework has been preserved. These are two distinct features: the measurements describe the basin, while the preserved framework offers insight into the construction. For directions, the washhouse is on the D33 towards Connerré, near La Genièbre.

Commemoration of the First World War

The war memorial in the cemetery commemorates the First World War. A plaque names 20 soldiers; the memorial is also part of a military burial area surrounded by interconnected shells. The site brings together its connection to the war, the remembrance of those named and the memorial’s place within the burial area. This is a different way to explore local history than through the architectural and restoration details of the church, former presbytery and washhouse. For travellers interested in local commemorative heritage as well as architecture, the memorial offers a distinct subject.
