The Circuit Ferriere puts a clear emphasis on getting around on foot in Mont-Saint-Jean. The church, Gallo-Roman villa, and washhouse also offer different ways to explore the area’s architectural and local history. You can tailor your stay to your interests: spend time outdoors or take a closer look at individual historic buildings and their background.

On foot along the Circuit Ferriere

The Circuit Ferriere is an easy 7.2-kilometre walking route, designated as a Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR). The stated duration is one hour. You can therefore factor both the distance and a time estimate into your day as a distinct activity; the easy rating adds information about the level of difficulty.

The route offers various viewpoints from one hill to another. It also includes a deeply cut path section about 300 metres long. In addition to the route’s length, the viewpoints between the hills and this distinctive section help define the hiking trail.

Panorama and geological context

Rochebrune and Saut du Serf together form a high-altitude viewpoint. From there, an exceptional panorama stretches across the Sillé-le-Guillaume state forest and the surrounding landscape. The rock at Saut du Serf is known as Sainte-Suzanne sandstone. This scenic destination thus combines expansive views with a specific geological designation.

A church shaped by building phases spanning several centuries

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in several phases, including the late 15th century, early 16th century, and second half of the 19th century. The first parish sanctuary is Romanesque in style. The church therefore represents not a single period of construction, but a building history linked to several eras.

An average of 25 minutes is allowed for an individual visit. Check the visiting arrangements on site before setting aside this time as a fixed part of your itinerary. For a tightly scheduled day, you can compare this directly with the Circuit Ferriere: the route takes one hour, while an individual visit to the church takes an average of 25 minutes. The church is therefore the shorter of the two activities.

The villa and community heritage

According to the archaeological discoveries to date, the known remains of the Villa gallo-romaine de Roullée/La Selle comprise 16 built units across 2.7 hectares. Taken together, the number and area convey the scale of the archaeological site. Unlike the architectural history of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the focus here is less on a series of construction phases in a religious building and more on an ensemble of known built units.

The story of the Lavoir de Quincampoix reflects both the circumstances of its construction and its preservation: it was built at the request of the commune’s washerwomen. Its restoration was carried out entirely by volunteers who cared about local heritage. The washhouse thus has a different focus from the church and villa: its history includes not only the building itself, but also a request from the community and voluntary efforts to preserve it.

Horse-riding lessons as another activity

Haras de la petite Boëlle offers riding lessons for children aged two and older, as well as for adults. Since lesson arrangements and prices may change, check the latest information before booking. Riding lessons add another distinct activity to the options, while the hiking trail, viewpoint, and architectural history offer different ways to shape your stay.
