Two walking routes provide a practical framework for planning active outings in Bonnétable: the historical trail is an easy, two-hour circular walk. “Côté chemin, côté jardin” is an 18-kilometre, moderate-difficulty walking trail of the Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR) type; the stated duration is three hours. This makes it easy to choose between a shorter historical circuit and a longer, moderately challenging walk. The historical trail is available on request from the tourist office; confirm that it is available before your trip.

Gardens and wildlife

The Jardin Potager de Bonnétable was created in 1885 by the Bühler brothers on the grounds of the château. Covering 13,000 m², it offers a variety of garden areas: a conservation garden for fruit varieties, beds featuring heritage varieties, a Mediterranean garden and an herb garden, as well as ponds and greenhouses. The garden is classified as a “Refuge” by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux. Nesting boxes, insect hotels and bat shelters are also part of the site; binoculars for observing wildlife can be borrowed there.

Individual visits to the Jardin Potager are free during the tourist office’s opening hours. Guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement, and educational workshops are offered for school groups. Check opening hours before your visit.

Two parks with distinct characters

The grounds of the Château de Bonnétable include two ponds, winding paths, several rustic-style garden structures and the ruins of the former Marteau mill. The Tripoulin runs through the Parc public de Bonnétable. The park has paths, preserved washhouses and opportunities to observe wildlife and plants. There is a children’s playground at the entrance, and fishing is permitted in the ponds. Bonnétable thus offers parks with different features: landscaped elements and historic remains in the château park, and paths, nature observation and other recreational uses in the public park.

Church and Catherine Paysan

The Église Saint-Sulpice was founded by Yves de Bellesme, the lord of Bonnétable. Its features include a wooden organ dating from 1850 and stained-glass windows created by Fialeix. The Catherine Paysan Museum displays a classroom from an earlier period, the former staff accommodation with its kitchen and bedrooms, and exhibitions about the writer’s life and work. The Maison d'école natale de l'écrivain Catherine Paysan is one of only two houses in France that are both a former school and a writer’s home. These features offer different ways to explore local history: through the church building and its furnishings, and through the story of Catherine Paysan.

Seasonal train ride

Transvap trains run regularly during the summer season and travel as far as Bonnétable. The 17-kilometre train ride passes through the countryside and bocage landscape. As operating days vary by season, check the timetable before your trip. This allows you to include the train ride in your plans without assuming it operates year-round.
