Évron offers several distinct highlights: sacred architecture and a cultural programme, routes with their own landscape and transport history, and green spaces and places for sporting activities. When planning your trip, you can choose based on whether you are most interested in architectural history, routes of varying lengths or outdoor activities.

Basilica and summer programme

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de l'Épine, which is also the abbey church of Évron, combines Romanesque, Gothic and Neoclassical architectural styles. This combination makes the building particularly interesting for anyone interested in culture: three distinct architectural influences come together here, rather than a single style defining its appearance.

Every summer, the Festival d'Arts Sacrés is held in the basilica. The six-day programme includes concerts, gatherings and opportunities to discover new things. The programme and dates vary each year; if you are planning your trip around the festival, check the current dates in advance.

Two routes with distinct characteristics

The Circuit des Marais is a 3.3 km circular route. It passes through a former marshland area that was drained to allow for subsequent urban development. So the route is notable not only for its specific length, but also for its landscape history: the area was transformed to make later urban development possible.

A quick connection from the Circuit des Marais to the Circuit des Fours à chaux is possible. This route is 10 km long, starts in Châtres-la-Forêt and follows an old Gallo-Roman road. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in their historical character: one crosses a former marshland, while the other follows an old road. The distance information helps you compare the options without suggesting that their routes are the same.

Historic landmarks in Évron and Châtres-la-Forêt

Château de Montecler has been listed as a historic monument since 2011. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the road. So plan to see it from the outside, and check this access restriction again before visiting.

Another glimpse of the local heritage is the Four Sainte-Anne, a lime kiln in Évron. In Châtres-la-Forêt, the Chapelle du Torticolis is dated to the 12th century. There is a grassy area with a picnic table by the chapel; check local conditions before your visit. Together, these places reflect different aspects of local history, from the lime kiln to the chapel dating back to the Middle Ages.

Green spaces, water and activity

The Zone Verte is a wooded area with a small pond, suitable for walks and sporting activities. The Parc de la Roë offers different features: a stream runs through it, and it has tables and benches. These specific features set the places apart without describing them as if they were the same.

The Jardin Aquatique adds another kind of leisure activity. The facility has leisure pools and a sports pool. It also has a balneotherapy area with a sauna and jacuzzi for adults. As the facilities may change, check the current opening hours before visiting.

Events and local history

Since 1966, the Festival de la Viande in Évron has brought together beef producers from the département and the region. Event dates vary each year. It offers a different focus from the Festival d'Arts Sacrés: while the latter centres on a six-day programme in the basilica, the Festival de la Viande brings together producers from the region and the département.

The historical escape game “Résistants” also draws on local history. Players take on the role of a member of the Resistance who lived in Évron in July 1941. Availability and booking details may change; check both before making this activity a firm part of your plans. Your trip can therefore include a range of experiences: architecture and a concert programme, historic routes, green spaces and a game based on a historical scenario.
