The rural landscape of Vauchrétien alternates between vineyards and forests. The village’s themes range from winemaking and trails through the countryside to a former industrial use. The Domaine des Giraudières, the Grand Luma, the Étang des Courtilliers and the Moulin de Ras each offer a different point of interest. If you are considering Vauchrétien as a place to stay overnight, you can first decide whether wine, landscape or cultural history should shape your stay.

Winemaking in Vauchrétien

The Domaine des Giraudières has been part of the Caves touristiques network since 2012. Tours of the vineyards and wine cellar offer a way to discover the wine-growing area. The estate produces Crémant de Loire, Anjou Brissac, Coteaux de l’Aubance and Bonnezeaux in Vauchrétien; all four wines are designated AOC. The visit therefore ranges from the vineyard to the cellar.

Walking trails and the Grand Luma

Vauchrétien has themed walking trails relating to a bread oven and vineyard huts. The Grand Luma is a discovery loop through the rural landscape and vineyards. The routes differ in their focus: the walking trails feature individual themes, while the Grand Luma puts the landscape and vines at its heart.

You can explore the Grand Luma on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The route passes through a section of the private Forêt de Brissac and by the Haie de Vauchrétien. The Forêt de Brissac covers 1,300 hectares and contains numerous tree species. As the route sheet is older, check local access conditions before setting out.

When choosing between the trails, two specific questions may help: Are you looking for walking trails that focus on individual themes, or are you interested in a loop through vineyards and rural landscapes? The Grand Luma also offers the options mentioned above of travelling on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

At the Étang des Courtilliers

At the Étang des Courtilliers, there is a demonstration vineyard with three grape varieties, a reconstructed vineyard hut and a distinctive well with slate slabs. Unlike the tours of the vineyards and wine cellar at the Domaine, the focus here is on the grape varieties and the structures by the Étang. This offers two different ways to encounter the subject of winemaking: through tours at the Domaine, and through the vineyard, hut and well at the Étang.

The Moulin de Ras and its history

The Moulin de Ras adds an industrial past to the wine and landscape themes. The former watermill is classified as industrial heritage; the building is a private residence. Its waterwheel powered a sawmill until 1918. Both its historic function and the building’s private status are among the mill’s defining details.
