Passavant-Sur-Layon can be explored through a range of travel interests: the fortress history of the Château de Passavant, the protected parts of the Église Saint-Étienne, winegrowing, a walk through the village and the Étang de Passavant-sur-Layon. This lets you decide whether architectural history, wine, exercise or time by the water should be the focus of your stay.

The château and church

The Château de Passavant was one of the fortresses built by Foulques Nerra in the first quarter of the 11th century. Since 9 August 1999, the entire château complex has been listed as a historic monument; the protection also covers the moats. At the Église Saint-Étienne, the choir, the adjoining bay and the south side chapel have been classified since 17 July 1926. The scope therefore differs: the entire complex is covered for the château, while three specific parts are named for the church. Anyone interested in local history can use this to understand both the early founding of the fortress and the extent of protection afforded to parts of the church.

Winegrowing and hiking

The Château de Passavant winery manages a 55-hectare vineyard. Certified organic farming methods have been used there since 1998, followed by Demeter-certified biodynamic methods since 2011. These details describe both the vineyard’s size and the development of its farming methods over time. Certification status can change; check the current status if it matters to your choice. The winery offers individual visitors one-hour wine tastings. Ask in advance about current availability if you would like to plan a tasting.

The Balade du Chat Botté hike passes through Passavant-Sur-Layon. It is 17.97 km long, takes around 5 hours 30 minutes and is considered moderately difficult. The route is well marked and has been validated by FFRandonnée Maine-et-Loire with yellow trail markings. Given its duration, it can be planned as a separate, longer activity. As the route may change, check the current route and trail markings on site before setting off.

At the Étang de Passavant-sur-Layon

A description from April 2021 says that the Étang de Passavant-sur-Layon is open for fishing and describes shaded paths for walks, as well as places to spend time on the shore. Alongside the longer hike, this offers another way to spend time outdoors: fishing, walking or relaxing by the water. Check the fishing and access conditions on site before your visit.

When planning your day, there is a clear difference in the time commitment between two activities: the wine tasting lasts one hour, while the hike takes around 5 hours 30 minutes. These different time commitments can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
