Marigné brings together a specific route and historic landmarks spanning several centuries. When planning your visit, you can focus on one of two interests: countryside and leisure along the Circuit des Papillons, or the chronology of the buildings. This lets you shape your stay around your preferred balance of walking and culture.

The Circuit des Papillons

The Circuit des Papillons starts at the municipal lake on the Route des Lizardières. It is 10.1 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes. These details give you an idea of the route’s length and approximate duration. The route brings together heritage, rural landscapes, leisure activities and relaxation by the lake. It is therefore a good choice if you would rather combine these themes in a route-based itinerary than focus on a single building.

Historical building phases

Port-Joulain was home to a recognised fortress in the 14th century. A century later, the first château and its chapel, which still survives today, were built on its remains. This sequence traces the transition from a fortified site to the château’s history; the chapel has been preserved as part of this heritage. Port-Joulain thus offers a specific historical focus for anyone interested in the development of the fortress and château.

The Église Saint-Pontien tells a different story of construction. Built in the 16th century, the church stands on the remains of a chapel dating from the 10th and 11th centuries. It was consecrated on 4 July 1512 and dedicated to Saint Pontius. Individual visitors and groups can explore the church independently on a tour lasting about 20 minutes. Visiting times may vary.

The Motte féodale dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and is considered a remnant of Marigné’s feudal ruling family. It adds another perspective on medieval rule to the history of the buildings. In contrast to Port-Joulain, the historical focus here is its connection with this family. The chronology thus runs from the motte of the 11th and 12th centuries to the church’s consecration in 1512.

Time for the route and a visit

There is a picnic area at the Plan d'eau de Marigné. As the facilities may be maintained locally, it is worth checking their condition before use. Two options of different lengths are available for planning your time: the Circuit takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes, while the self-guided tour of the Église Saint-Pontien takes about 20 minutes. This lets you choose between a longer route-based itinerary and a short visit. Bear in mind that the church’s visiting times may vary.
