Arthon-en-Retz lies in the Pays de Retz, between wetlands, farmland and bocage landscapes. The area offers a range of options for a stay: a circular route for outdoor exercise, historic buildings and direct sales at a soap factory. When planning your visit, it is worth considering nature, outdoor activities, architectural history and shopping as separate highlights.
Landscape and natural environment
The wider Arthon-Chéméré natural area includes the site “Bois des Iles Enchantées et pelouses calcaires résiduelles d’Arthon-Chéméré”. It comprises calcareous sandy grasslands and wasteland, remnant areas on decalcified sandy soils, woodland, various meadows and former quarries. The natural area therefore cannot be reduced to a single habitat type: its description includes soils, woodland and meadows as well as the former quarries.
The plant and insect life is another distinctive aspect of this area. Rare plants, especially orchids, as well as butterflies and grasshoppers associated with calcareous or coastal habitats can be found here. The site is a type I ZNIEFF in the commune of Chaumes-en-Retz and covers 105.54 hectares. Nature enthusiasts can focus on both the variety of habitats and particular groups of species; the natural area extends into the wider Arthon-Chéméré region.
Explore on foot or by bike
The Circuit d’Arthon-en-Retz à la Sicaudais is a circular route for hiking or cycling. It starts at the picnic area by the La Sicaudais body of water. Both activities use the same named route: when planning, you are not choosing between two different routes, but deciding whether to take it on foot or by bike. As a circular route, it returns to the starting point, offering a different way to explore the area than visiting a single attraction.
Built heritage from different periods
The present-day Église Saint-Martin in Arthon-en-Retz was built between 1862 and 1865. The church tower roof has its own date: it is covered with copper diamond tiles and was completed in 1892. This distinguishes the construction period of the church from the later completion of this architectural detail. Anyone interested in architectural history can compare the 19th-century church building with the tower roof, completed later.
The Croix Saint-Vital dates from a much earlier period. The cross dates back to the 15th century and is located near a well. This offers two distinct historical points of reference: the 15th-century cross and the Église Saint-Martin, built in the 19th century, with its tower roof completed in 1892. If you plan to visit the Croix Saint-Vital specifically, check access locally before setting out.
Direct sales in Haute Perche
Savons de Retz offers direct sales at its soap factory in Haute Perche, Arthon-en-Retz. This is a separate reason to visit, in addition to the landscape, circular route and historic sites: you can make a visit to the factory shop another highlight of your trip. As opening arrangements may change, check the current sales details before planning a visit specifically for this purpose.
