Paris 11 brings together different aspects of city life: an ecologically designed green space, listed buildings, exhibitions and live performances. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing permanent historical landmarks from events with changing dates. This way, you can tailor your stay to what interests you most: garden design, architectural history or a current cultural programme.

Green space and promenade at Jardin Truillot

Jardin Truillot is a green space of just under 5,600 square metres, designed with ecological principles in mind. Its landscape includes a wetland area, flowering meadows, grapevines and fruit trees. These varied features give the garden more character than a simple stretch of lawn. A broad promenade connects Boulevard Voltaire with Boulevard Richard-Lenoir. The garden thus combines designed natural areas with a clearly defined route through the urban landscape; the promenade and the ecological areas offer two distinct reasons to visit.

Building history and protected memorial sites

Several buildings and sites tell stories from different periods of Parisian history. The Piscine Oberkampf was built between 1884 and 1887 and was then one of the first bathing establishments of its kind in Paris. Its Art Deco architecture includes a glass roof, a terrace, a vestibule with stained glass and a courtyard fireplace. These features have been protected as historic monuments since 25 August 2023. The construction period and the date of protection mark two distinct historical layers: the building’s creation and the later protection of its architectural details.

The Église Sainte-Marguerite is also protected as a historic monument. One of its chapels features trompe-l’œil paintings, which create the illusion of spatial depth, as well as works from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Art history enthusiasts will find not just a single period represented here, but works spanning several centuries. At the Cirque d’Hiver, the building’s history meets the history of performance: it has been protected as a historic monument by decree dated 10 February 1975. On 12 November 1859, Jules Léotard invented the flying trapeze there. Historical tours of the building are offered separately from the shows; check the dates if you would like to plan a visit.

Today’s Square de la Roquette stands on the site of prisons that operated from 1830 to 1974. A prison gate and a memorial plaque have survived from the former site. The square thus combines a present-day green space with visible commemorative markers and a history spanning more than a century.

Exhibitions, music and live performances

The Atelier des Lumières is housed in a former foundry dating from 1835, which became a digital art centre in 2018. It presents digital, immersive and contemporary exhibitions. The conversion of a historic industrial building and its current exhibition formats create a contrast that makes the venue particularly interesting to visitors drawn to both architecture and contemporary art.

The Maison des Métallos is located at 94 Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud. Its artistic programme is ambitious, popular and multidisciplinary. The Musée Édith Piaf was established in 1978 in the apartment where Édith Piaf lived with her daughter Marcelle. In two rooms of an apartment where Piaf lived for a short time, the museum displays personal belongings, photographs, letters and memorabilia. Visits are by prior appointment at 5 Rue Crespin du Gast; arrange your appointment before planning your visit.

The Bataclan is located at 50 Boulevard Voltaire in the 11th arrondissement. Its programme includes concerts, festivals, as well as sports and yoga activities; individual events vary. The venue describes itself as a rock-oriented space that brings together different musical styles. The Cirque d’Hiver adds shows and historical building tours, which are offered separately. Check the dates for both venues if you are planning a specific visit.

Plan around dates and interests

Cultural venues and activities scheduled for specific dates require different kinds of planning. The Marché des Producteurs de Pays takes place at Marché Popincourt every three months, over a weekend. Check the event date before your trip. Visits to the Musée Édith Piaf require an appointment in advance, while the specific options at the Bataclan depend on its programme. When looking for a holiday apartment in Paris 11, you can first decide which experiences you would like to shape your stay, then plan your trip accordingly.
