Vimoutiers offers several ways to explore: monastic history and organ music, cheese knowledge and a costume collection, workshop activities, and a walking route through sunken lanes. Each theme has its own focus. You can choose Vimoutiers according to whether you are more interested in architectural history, regional cheese-making, artistic techniques, or a walk between Vimoutiers and Camembert.

History and music in Vimoutiers

At the Vieux Couvent, architectural history meets monastic life. The oldest section dates from the late 16th century and includes a half-timbered upper floor with a pavilion roof. Benedictine nuns lived there from 1650 until the Revolution. This offers two concrete perspectives on local history: the architectural details and its use as a convent.

The Cavaillé-Coll organ also offers its own point of reference in time: it was built in 1898 and inaugurated in 1899. The organ is used for concerts organized throughout the year by the association Les Amis des Orgues. The dates clearly distinguish between the instrument’s creation and its later inauguration; the concert program adds a musical perspective to its history.

Camembert, costumes and creative practice

The Camembert Museum combines educational displays with tastings. An archival film explains various stages in making Camembert de Normandie AOP. The museum also offers tastings of this cheese and other cheeses from the Pays d’Auge. Both the production process and the flavor of regional cheeses are at the heart of the visit—two different ways to explore a culinary theme.

A different collection is housed at the Museum of Costume and Theatre Arts: more than 4,000 costumes. It has a clear focus on clothing and theatre arts rather than food production. Visitors choosing cultural topics can therefore distinguish between a costume collection and an insight into cheese-making at the Camembert Museum.

The Maison de l’Art Vivant offers introductory workshops in stained glass, painting on glass, analogue photography with developing and printing, typography, printmaking and ceramics. The range extends from work with glass and images to printing techniques and ceramics. Unlike a collection, these activities focus on getting to know a variety of artistic techniques in a workshop setting.

Mills and the walking route between Vimoutiers and Camembert

Mills are also part of the local history. The Vimoutiers mill still has working millstones. The mill on the La Vie retains its original equipment and accessories. This makes two distinct aspects tangible: the millstones’ ability to function and the preservation of the equipment and accessories.

If you would like to include some countryside alongside culture, consider the “Au Pays du Camembert” walking route. It passes through sunken lanes typical of the region and runs between Vimoutiers and the well-known village of Camembert. It thus complements the museum and cultural themes with a walking option featuring clearly named places and a distinctive landscape. The route offers a different focus from the collections and workshops: here, the walk through the sunken lanes takes center stage.
