The RN 12 divides Saint-Julien-Sur-Sarthe into two named areas: Carré Saint-Julien, which borders Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe, and the Bourg district. When looking for a holiday rental, these names provide specific reference points to help you make sense of location descriptions. The area also has buildings and memorial sites, as well as landscape features that can shape your stay in different ways.

Local history in buildings and place names

The town hall is located in a former girls’ school dating from the late 19th century. Its former use as a school and its current municipal function therefore come together in one building. The Chapelle au Carré dates from the early 19th century; a 19th-century church is also among the local sights. The construction dates provide a clear contrast: the chapel represents the early part of the century, while the former school represents the late 19th century. The church adds another local point of interest from this period. There is also an underground cavity beneath the former school and town hall complex.

The historic character of the area also includes the Château de Montgoubert and its outbuildings. Colbert is said to have visited the château or passed through on his travels. The place name “champ des Huguenots” preserves the memory of events; the site bearing this name is next to the former Catholic cemetery. Buildings, historical connections and place names that preserve memories offer different ways to explore the local past.

Fire brigade museum and collection

You can view a collection at the Espace muséal of the Union départementale des sapeurs-pompiers de l’Orne. It is located at the Maison des sapeurs-pompiers de l’Orne, 18 Rue de Mamers, in Saint-Julien-Sur-Sarthe. The collection includes small fire brigade equipment, horse-drawn pumps and motorised vehicles. The contrast between horse-drawn pumps and motorised vehicles illustrates different technical solutions; the small equipment adds another category of objects to the collection. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor arrangements before setting out.

Landscape and viewpoints

Saint-Julien-Sur-Sarthe is part of the Haute Vallée de la Sarthe Natura 2000 site, which covers 3,503 hectares. The Haute Vallée de la Sarthe is a broad alluvial valley landscape with extensive natural nutrient-poor meadows. In contrast to this expansive landscape, the local viewpoints offer specific vistas over the Perche. The area also includes the large private woodland of Bois de Montgoubert. This brings together three distinct landscape features: the Natura 2000 site with its valley landscape, viewpoints overlooking the Perche, and an explicitly private woodland. “Alluvial” refers to sediments deposited by a river and explains the geological context; the natural nutrient-poor meadows, meanwhile, describe the vegetation of this broad valley landscape.
