A square bell tower with Gothic windows and traces of former paper mills offer two different historical perspectives on Le Theil. Hiking trails also lead through a hilly landscape. You can choose whether to focus your stay on architectural history, industrial heritage or nature.

A Church with Several Building Phases

Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is considered Le Theil’s oldest historic monument and dates back to the 12th century. It is listed as a French historic monument. However, its construction history extends well beyond these origins: in 1449, the church was badly damaged by the English, partially rebuilt from the 15th century onwards, and altered in the 19th century. The square bell tower, its Gothic windows and slender spire give the building a distinctive architectural profile. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find a concrete starting point here for exploring the town’s different periods.

The Paper Industry and the History of the Routes

The paper industry is also part of the history of Le Theil-sur-Huisne. The remains of the Abadie paper mill are an example of typical industrial architecture. On the banks of the Huisne, the former factory is presented as a symbol of Le Theil’s paper industry along the La vallée de l’Huisne hiking trail. The route follows the Chemin noir, a former railway line that connected the paper mills of Le Theil and Mâle. The trail’s description thus brings together two traces of working history: the former factory and the railway connection between the paper mills.

Hiking with Different Points of Interest

La Tuilerie des Saules is a circular route that combines the industrial heritage of the Huisne Valley with varied, hilly scenery of woods, hills and meadows. Another perspective is offered by the short connection from Le Theil-sur-Huisne to Saint-Germain-de-la-Coudre: it links the Huisne Valley with the southern part of the historic Bellême area. The routes therefore offer different points of interest. La vallée de l’Huisne follows the history of the paper industry and the former railway line; La Tuilerie des Saules also features a changing landscape of woods, hills and meadows. The connection to Saint-Germain-de-la-Coudre, in turn, places Le Theil within a wider historic landscape. When choosing, consider whether you would prefer to focus on industrial heritage, scenery or a combination of the two.

Events and Cultural Offerings

The Fête du Coucou takes place every April in Le Theil-sur-Huisne. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific dates for the year in question. The Cinéma Saint Louis is also part of the local cultural scene. For the 2024/25 season, it was described as a fully renovated arthouse cinema with 123 seats and access for people with reduced mobility. If you are planning a cinema visit, check the current programme in advance.
