Inside the tower of the Château de Rânes, a spiral staircase within the thick walls leads to the Fairy Chamber. Rânes also offers a 17-hectare château park, a museum of prehistory, a Neo-Romanesque funerary chapel and seasonal horse races. Two questions can help you plan your trip: Which of these themes would you like to focus on, and should a particular race date determine when you visit?

Château Park and Grounds

The park of the Château de Rânes covers 17 hectares and combines wooded areas with more open spaces, where sports and recreational facilities are located. The grounds of the château and the park are open to visitors free of charge; check that they are open before you travel. There are play areas for children in the park, and fishing is also possible. The orienteering course includes hidden checkpoints marked with punches.

Tower and Museum at the Château

During a visit to the tower, a spiral staircase within the thick walls leads to the Fairy Chamber. The route makes the building’s architectural feature immediately clear; the chamber’s name adds a fairy-tale touch to the architecture. The Musée de la préhistoire is located in the basement of the château. For children, it offers games, interactive exhibits, excavation activities and puzzles. The château therefore brings together two distinct ways to explore: discovering an architectural detail in the tower and engaging with prehistory through the museum’s interactive activities.

Chapelle des Princes de Berghes

The Chapelle des Princes de Berghes, also known as the Chapelle St Pierre, is a Neo-Romanesque funerary chapel designed by Victor Ruprich-Robert. The two terms describe different aspects: Neo-Romanesque refers to the architectural style, while funerary chapel describes the building’s purpose. Since the decree of 15 November 2010, the chapel and its original furnishings have been listed as Monuments historiques.

Horse Racing at the Hippodrome du Parc

The Hippodrome du Parc racecourse is set in the château’s picturesque park, on the edge of Rânes town centre. Five races are held each year: on Easter Monday, Whit Monday, and in July and August. Dates may change, so check the race calendar before planning your trip around a race. Horse racing is therefore a calendar-dependent event and gives your visit a different timing focus from the architecture and museum attractions.

Lavoir du Gué-Hébert and Its History

The Lavoir du Gué-Hébert is located beside the Rânette stream near La Berrerie, on the road to Écouché. The washhouse was built in the early 19th century. In September 1881, flooding of the Rânette swept away one of its walls; the building was subsequently restored. The stream is part of the lavoir’s history in two ways: it forms part of the site and also caused the damage that led to the restoration.

A Cycle Route as Another Planning Option

The commune of Rânes maintains the «La campagne au temps des forges» cycle route. If you include it in your plans, check the route conditions before setting off.
