In Champeaux-Sur-Sarthe, two distinct scales come together: the church of Saint-Gilles as a single building and the extensive Natura 2000 site Haute Vallée de la Sarthe, which includes the commune. You can therefore shape your trip around specific cultural and natural themes. The church can be explored through its Romanesque architecture and interior details; the protected area represents a landscape and its plant life. Which perspective appeals to you most depends on whether you are more interested in church architecture or ecological connections.

Romanesque architecture and furnishings at Saint-Gilles

The church of Saint-Gilles was built in the 12th century to a Romanesque ground plan. Its single-nave layout is flanked by shallow buttresses and ends in an apsidal choir. The ground plan thus combines a longitudinal main space with a rounded choir end. The west gable features a portal with a semicircular archivolt arch. Engaged columns with carved capitals frame the arch and give the entrance its distinctive architectural details.

Inside the church, it is also worth looking at the different forms of decoration. Above the panelling are rectangular panels depicting angels holding scrolls. Friezes on the choir walls show kneeling angels facing the altar. The two motifs differ in their position and orientation: the panels are above the panelling, while the friezes adorn the choir. Together, they give the interior its own visual language, offering another way to explore the church beyond the simple description of its nave and choir.

A distinct object is the cylindrical baptismal font, decorated with blind arcading in low relief. It is located northwest of the nave. The font belongs to the commune and was listed as a protected object on 24 July 2000. Its protected status should therefore be distinguished from the church’s construction in the 12th century. The Maillard family, owners of Château de la Jarrière, also contributed to the history of the church’s furnishings: they donated its stained-glass windows and bells. The badly damaged monumental paintings have been refastened; missing areas have been retouched and filled in.

The Natura 2000 site Haute Vallée de la Sarthe

Champeaux-Sur-Sarthe is one of the communes included in the Natura 2000 site Haute Vallée de la Sarthe. The protected area covers 3,503 hectares; 80 percent of it lies in the Orne department and 20 percent in the Sarthe department. These figures illustrate the larger regional scale of the site, which extends beyond a single commune.

Except for its headwater areas, the Haute Vallée de la Sarthe is a broad alluvial valley. Its landscape features include extensive natural nutrient-poor grasslands, a highly branched network of watercourses, and areas that are marshy in places. The soils support notable plant communities. Nutrient-poor grasslands are low-nutrient meadows; together with the watercourses and marshy areas, they create different ecological conditions within the protected site. The nature-focused perspective is therefore about the variety of habitats and plant communities, not a single building or attraction.

At the regional level, 42 percent of the Natura 2000 site overlaps with the Normandie-Maine Regional Natural Park. This figure refers to the share of the protected site that overlaps with the park. It adds a second geographical context to the division between departments: the Haute Vallée de la Sarthe is both part of a broader nature conservation framework and an area with its own distinct landscape.

Which focus suits your trip?

The difference between the two themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. Saint-Gilles represents a single building, with its Romanesque ground plan, portal, interior furnishings, and baptismal font. The Haute Vallée de la Sarthe, by contrast, encompasses a larger ecological unit with meadows, watercourses, and areas that are marshy in places. If you are mainly interested in architecture and church furnishings, Saint-Gilles offers a clearly defined cultural focus. If you want to focus on landscape forms and plant habitats, you can make the Natura 2000 site a nature theme for your trip. If you are planning a specific visit to the church, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
