Le Sap combines a distinctive townscape with several links to its architectural and local history: from a church with building phases spanning several centuries to historic equipment associated with apples and Calvados. There is also a 12 km walking route. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your trip: architectural history, cider or a longer walk.

Townscape and landscape

The streets and lanes of Le Sap combine half-timbered houses with two-storey brick buildings. This mix reveals different building styles in the townscape. Le Sap has also been awarded the Petite Cité de Caractère® designation. In terms of landscape, the town lies on the edge of the Ouche Plateau, between the valleys of the Charentonne and the Touques. The townscape and location are two distinct aspects of this destination: the houses shape the view along the streets, while the plateau and the two valleys provide its geographical setting.

Church and historical traces

Several building phases can be identified at the Church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul, spanning the 14th century, the 16th century, the second half of the 17th century and the 19th century. The church was set on fire by the Huguenots in 1562. Its building history thus extends well beyond a single century, while the fire marks a specific historical event.

The Grand Jardin adds a different group of buildings to the local history: it is a restored former farmstead with buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. At Fort Montpellier, different traces have survived: part of a large ditch and a remnant of the fortification wall. These sites represent different kinds of historical remains: here, the buildings of a former farmstead; there, parts of a fortification. This allows you to distinguish between these themes in your planning rather than attributing all the historical traces to the same type of structure.

Apples, Calvados and cider

The Ecomusée de la Pomme au Calvados showcases historic equipment associated with apples and Calvados: a wooden, two-wheeled crushing mill and a long-arm press from the 18th century. Both the equipment and its technical function are part of the local cider story. The Fête du cidre is held in Le Sap every November and includes demonstrations of cider making and distillation. The festival programme may vary from year to year. The museum and the event offer different perspectives: historic equipment at the Ecomusée and demonstrations at the November festival.

Walking from Le Sap

The walking route is a 12 km circular walk starting at the Place du marché in Le Sap. The 12 km distance gives you a concrete reference point for planning your day. If you plan to walk the route, check local trail conditions before setting out. Alongside the townscape, architectural history and cider, this gives you a clearly defined walking option.
