Flers brings together château history, a listed memorial site and leisure activities. The Château de Flers and its park combine architectural history, nature and exercise; the Chapelle du Souvenir adds a distinctive touch with its Art Deco architecture and commemorative purpose. Digital cultural offerings, a family puzzle trail and a converted railway line expand the range of activities. When planning your stay, it is worth first considering whether culture, time in green spaces or active leisure should shape your visit.
Château and digital culture
The Château de Flers is protected as a “Monument historique”. Its oldest wing was built in the 16th century under the influence of Nicolas III de Grosparmy; the Neoclassical façade was created in the 18th century by Ange-Hyacinthe de la Motte-Ango. The château thus brings together two distinctly separate building phases: an older wing and a later Neoclassical façade. The Musée du château de Flers offers an interactive visit to the château through the mobile app “Flers virtuel 2: le château”.
The Micro-Folie de Flers complements this focus with digital art interpretation. When it opened in 2020, it was the first Micro-Folie in the Orne département. Its digital museum allows visitors to discover several thousand masterpieces from national and regional museums. The two digital offerings therefore have different focuses: the app is dedicated to the Château, while the digital museum features works from museum collections.
Chapelle du Souvenir and the history of Flers
The Chapelle du Souvenir is another architectural and historical highlight. Built between 1926 and 1932 in the Art Deco style, it was designed as a memorial to those killed in war. On 19 May 2006, the complex was designated a “Monument historique”. The protection covers façades, decorations, stained-glass windows and frescoes, furnishings, as well as certain liturgical vestments. The façade tower is decorated with claustra-style ornamentation. In 2020, Flers also received the “Patrimoine de la Reconstruction en Normandie” label.
Park, water and exercise
The Parc du château de Flers covers 26 hectares and has been classified as a natural site and natural monument of artistic character since 1908. The park also contains an ornithological reserve. For exercise, there are fitness areas and an adventure course for children aged 3 to 14. Nature observation and active leisure are therefore two distinct ways to enjoy the park.
The Capfl’O leisure pool adds 3,500 m² of water-based leisure space to the cultural and park attractions. The spa area includes a balneotherapy section with a sauna, hammam and jacuzzi. If you plan to use these facilities, check the practical details before your visit.
Puzzles, routes and getting there
The family puzzle trail “Rando Jeu: Flers sous toutes ses facettes” introduces Flers’s history, places and unusual local stories. It offers a different focus from the château and museum attractions, centring on the town’s places and stories. For outdoor activities, the Voie verte Flers-Domfront runs along converted former railway lines and is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. Check current route conditions before setting out.
If travelling by train, Flers station is an option: it is served by the Paris–Granville TER railway line. Check current services before travelling.
