Valcanville can be discovered from two different perspectives: the Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Firmin and the Le domaine de Walkan walking route through the Val de Saire landscape. The church tells the story of its construction phases and religious traditions; the former horse market was held at Clos Saint-Firmin near the church. The walking route offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. This places local history and outdoor activity side by side as two distinct travel interests.
Church and architectural history
The imposing bell tower and its stone saddleback roof, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, are all that remain of the original Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Firmin. In 1827, the church was completely demolished apart from the bell tower and rebuilt on a larger scale: ten metres wide and 55 metres long. This makes it possible to distinguish the surviving tower from the rebuilding of the rest of the church as separate construction phases.
During restoration work, 15th-century frescoes were uncovered and restored in a chapel adjoining the church. The altar of Saint Firmin in the Église Notre-Dame is dated to around 1852 or 1855 and attributed to Etienne-Jean-Philippe Aubin, who came from Valcanville. A local tradition of devotion associates Saint Firmin with prayers for relief from epilepsy, nervous disorders and insomnia. The church’s history therefore encompasses not only architecture but also art and religious tradition.
The Commandery and local history
The Commanderie de Valcanville was founded in the 12th century and successively belonged to the Templars, the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and the Order of Malta. It is privately owned. As part of the 2026 cultural heritage programme, a guided tour with commentary on the history and buildings dating from the 12th to the 18th centuries was offered. Check dates and availability before making plans.
The Manoir du Marais is a privately owned manor house dating from the 16th century, altered in various periods. Clos Saint-Firmin, near the church, also has a historical connection to local life: a horse market was held there on 25 September, Saint Firmin’s Day. In 1949, it still brought together up to 241 horses and 61 cattle.
Walking the Le domaine de Walkan route
Le domaine de Walkan is an easy circular walking route in Valcanville: it is 7.1 kilometres long and takes around two hours. The footpaths offer idyllic views across the Val de Saire landscape. The route also passes the Commandery, one of the village’s historical remains. The walk thus combines scenery with a specific historical point of interest.
There is a car park near the starting point. Check current path and parking conditions before setting out, as these may change. The approximate duration and route length make the walk easy to plan as a standalone activity; the church and historical sites offer a different focus. Visitors choosing Valcanville can therefore weigh up a specific walking route and a range of cultural and historical themes.
