Sainte-Mère-Église offers several ways to explore local history and life today: a church begun in the Romanesque style and completed in the Gothic style, insights into agriculture, and a dedicated place for peace and community. There is also a signposted walking tour through the streets, the Airborne Museum and a local market. For planning your visit, architectural history, rural life and cultural activities each offer a different perspective: the walking tour takes you through the town, while the museums explore historical themes and La Grange de la Paix offers a broad cultural programme.

Church and walking tour

Construction of the church in Sainte-Mère-Église began in the 11th century in the Romanesque style and was completed almost four centuries later in the Gothic style. Its beginnings and completion thus belong to different eras; the transition from Romanesque to Gothic gives the church a distinct architectural history. Two stained-glass windows were donated in memory of the Liberation. They add a specific commemorative dimension to the church’s architecture.

A signposted 30-minute walking tour takes visitors through the streets of Sainte-Mère-Église. The stated duration gives you a clear indication of how long to allow for this part of your visit. The tour and the church offer different perspectives: one leads through the streets, while the other tells the story of several building phases and the remembrance of the Liberation.

Agriculture and rural life

The Ferme-musée du Cotentin offers a glimpse into daily life and the atmosphere of a grassland farm in the early 20th century. The exhibits are housed in the manor house of a former farm. Exhibition areas include a common room, a cellar for storing cider, a cider press, a bakery, a cowshed, a livestock barn and carriage sheds. These rooms and work areas bring the themes of storage, processing and animal husbandry to life.

The outdoor trail features animals of Norman breeds, an apiary and the farmer’s kitchen garden. Exhibitions also cover the region’s agricultural history, from the past to the present. Horse-drawn and motorised machinery illustrate changes in agricultural work. In this way, the museum connects life on a historic farm with regional development and technological change; the indoor rooms, outdoor trail and machinery exhibit each offer a distinct focus.

A place of peace and the D-Day experience

La Grange de la Paix was inaugurated in June 2022 and is a place of peace, community and welcome, open to all. It offers exhibitions, concerts and conferences, as well as workshops on peace education, creative and playful activities, and a space for silence and contemplation. Alongside opportunities to share experiences and learn together, there is also a dedicated space for quiet reflection. The programme may change, so check the current events and activities before your visit.

The Airborne Museum conveys part of the D-Day experience through a sequence inside a C-47 aircraft and the arrival of a glider in the Norman bocage landscape. These two scenes offer a different focus from the church’s architectural history or the development of agriculture. Exhibition features may change, so it is worth checking what is currently on display before your visit.

Market and planning your visit

The local market in Sainte-Mère-Église takes place at Place Pierre-Maury, at the foot of the church. This identifies a specific location for the market, while the museums and walking tour reveal other sides of the town. If you would like to plan a visit to the market, check the latest dates before your trip.
