There are several ways to discover Saint-Lô: the Haras national is dedicated to equestrian culture, the Musée d'art et d'histoire to the city's history, and the fortifications offer views across the surrounding area. The various visits and routes provide practical time estimates to help you plan, from a walk along the city walls to a longer visit to the stud farm.
Equestrian Culture at the Haras national
The Haras national de Saint-Lô offers tours focusing on its history, heritage and the many activities involving horses. Its seasonal program, available from April to September, includes a tour lasting about an hour and a half; check the latest dates before your trip. There is also a self-guided route, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its 23 points of interest include notable trees, historic buildings in the main courtyard and specialized horse facilities. It is advisable to check the latest access details before your visit. Equestrian events are also held on the grounds; check the current calendar for dates.
The tour and the route focus on different things: the tour centers on history, heritage and activities involving horses, while the route takes you independently past selected points around the grounds. This lets you match your interest in horses to the time you have available. Check the dates separately for the seasonal visit and events.
City History and Remembrance
The Musée d'art et d'histoire is located in the center of Saint-Lô. The building, with its contemporary architecture, was inaugurated in 1989 as part of a cultural center designed by architect Eugène Leseney. The museum explores the city's art and history from its origins to the present day, presenting more than 2,000 years of city history. This includes the destruction of the Second World War and the subsequent reconstruction. Temporary exhibitions complement the museum; check which exhibitions are on before your visit.
Another way to explore the past is to visit the Chapelle de la Madeleine. It is the surviving part of a former 13th-century leper colony and is protected as a historic monument. A memorial inside the chapel uses photographs to recall the fighting and the liberation of Saint-Lô; there are also commemorative plaques. The museum and the chapel offer different perspectives: the former explores the city's art and development in a broader historical context, while the latter focuses on the history of the site and remembrance of the liberation.
City Walls, Views and Routes
The fortifications sit on a natural shale outcrop in a landscape shaped by the valleys of the Torteron, Dollée and Vire rivers. The rock made it possible to control a strategic meeting point of several roads and a navigable river. The Tour des Beaux Regards rises more than 30 meters above the highest part of the city walls. From there, you can see across lower Saint-Lô, the Vire and nearby communities.
A cycling route also uses the city walls as its starting point: the “Au pied des remparts” circuit begins at their base and ends with views of the Vire Valley. There are several smartphone routes for walks, each with its own estimated duration. The free, entirely self-guided Reconstruction Route takes about two hours; the also free, self-guided Liberation Route takes about one hour and 30 minutes. A narrated, geolocated route around the city walls is accessible to everyone via the Wivisites app and takes about 45 minutes. Check that the app is currently available before you go. The approximate durations make it easy to compare the routes: the city walls route takes less time than the two themed smartphone walks.
